MSA Sports Friday Night HighLights for Week Two
September 10, 2016

A long winning streak stretching over parts of seven years came to a sudden halt...a long losing streak came within inches of ending...and depending on what part of Western Pennsylvania you were watching your favorite team, you either had to deal with a pregame sprinkle or a mid-game downpour. Oh yeah, there were these gems that provided the icing on a very delicious scholastic football cake. Phil Jurkovec - Pine-Richland

Scholastic Notebook – 09/09/2016
September 9, 2016
Pine-Richland quarterback Phil Jurkovec has been all the rage of dual-threat quarterbacks in the WPIAL the past two seasons. Jurkovec has gotten many props and loads of publicity – rightly so – for his ability to throw and run. But up north at small Neshannock High School, there is another quarterback doing big things running and passing. Frankly speaking, he could finish with statistics you don’t see often from WPIAL quarterbacks.

Baldwin Highlanders Hometown Volleyball Broadcast Recap – 09/08/2016
September 8, 2016
If there was ever a volleyball match that could be classified as a ‘slugfest’, the match between Upper St. Clair and Baldwin on Thursday night in the South Hills of Pittsburgh was it.  The Panthers won a knock-down, drag out fight pitting two of the top teams in Class 4-A, Section 2 by a score of 3-2.  Upper St. Clair prevailed in set one (25-18) behind the energy and strength of their outside hitter, Alex Amos and Isabelle Walsh and the serving of freshman Hannah Coggins.  But Baldwin would answer in set two by the same score 25-18.  Maddi Sgattoni hammered home seven of her game-high total of 22 kills to even the match at 1-1.  The Panthers would win a barn-burner in the 3rd set, outlasting the Highlanders 25-23.

Chicks Picks for Week Two
Welcome to Week 2 of the high school football season. Chick’s Picks has been fortunate enough to make a lot of friends throughout her prognosticating career – some that are unforgettable, and others that she cares to forget.  One of Chick’s Picks’ favorites happens to be a very dear Twitter pal, who happens to be the better half of a local coach.  This Twitter pal in particular has stood by Chick’s Picks through good times and bad – weeks when the crystal ball was on fire, as well as weeks when early retirement was considered.  Earlier this season, during Week Zero, Chick’s Picks’ pal even came through with her own prediction when the crystal ball was in the shop for maintenance.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Frannie Crouse
September 5, 2016
Very few high-school athletes are able to capture a WPIAL Championship. Even fewer are fortunate enough to win a PIAA Championship. Winning an NCAA National Championship, though, is incredibly rare. Frannie Crouse, a soccer standout former at Greensburg Central Catholic and currently at Penn State University, has accomplished all three feats. As a result, she is the first student-athlete profiled for the 2016-17 edition of the WPIAL Alum Q&A. Crouse had a legendary career with the Centurions, as she set records and established herself as one of the best performers in recent memory. To that point, she held the all-time state record for goals when she graduated. She also was named an All-State performer as both a junior and a senior.
