WPIAL Basketball Playoff Recaps for Saturday, February 14th

Just like Day One, Day Two offered little in surprises with a #10 seed (Upper St. Clair boys) and a pair of #9 seeds (Bethel Park boys and Imani Christian girls) moving on to Round Two. Here are recaps from Preliminary Round and First Round action in Boys AAAA, Boys AA, Girls AAA and Girls A on a snowy Saturday. A special thanks to Mike Azadian, Josh Rowntree, T.J. The curtain has gone up on the 2015 WPIAL Basketball Playoffs with Preliminary Round and First Round action from Boys Class AAA, Boys Class A, Girls Class AAAA and Girls Class AA. There were no surprises as First Round winners move on to the Quarterfinals next Friday while Preliminary Round victors prepare for Round One on Tuesday. Here are recaps from the nine boys and nine girls games on Friday the 13th. In a span of 48-hours, Woodland Hills senior sharp shooter Mike Krivi became the golden boy on the range. After helping the wolverines win a second straight district team championship on Tuesday, Krivi won the individual title Thursday at the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen's Club in Canonsburg. Krivi was one of 18 shooters to score a 200, but claimed the gold after hitting 19 bulls-eyes. In doing so, he becomes the first Woodland Hills shooter to win the individual crown. Krivi finished 10th in last years WPIAL finals. Woodland Hills High School claimed their second straight district rifle championship and third in the last four years by registering a perfect score of 800 Tuesday afternoon in the 2015 WPIAL Team Rifle Finals at the Dormont-Mt.Lebanon Sportsmen's Club in Canonsburg. The team score of 800 (69x) was the second highest score in the WPIAL Team Championship history, just behind the record set by the Wolverines last year of 800 (74x). Two other schools registered perfect scores as Trinity finished second with a score of 800 (64x) and McGuffey was third with an 800 (56x). 2013 champion Hempfield finished fourth with a score of 799 while Butler (797) and Waynesburg (795) finished fifth and sixth respectively.FINAL 2014-2015 WPIAL Boys Basketball Standings

Last weekend at the WPIAL Championships, Franklin Regional had to win both of their matches by winning the last bout. At the PIAA Championships in Hershey, it wasn’t the last bout of the night, but it still took a pair of tight wins for the Panthers to repeat as PIAA Champs. After defeating Spring Ford 49-18 and Council Rock South 45-13, Franklin Regional, ranked #2 in the state, would take on the #1 ranked team in Bethlehem Catholic in the semi-finals. After jumping out to a 9-4 lead, Franklin Regional would get upset at 152 pounds. Senior Josh Maruca would drop a 3-2 decision to Michael Labriola. Although Josh Shields would come out to pickup a technical fall win, the loss by Maruca kept the marginal lead to seven at 14-7.2015 PIAA Team Wrestling Playoffs Results
For only the second time in history, a WPIAL team has repeated as team state wrestling champions. Following in the footsteps of the 2012 and the 2013 Canon-McMillan teams, Franklin Regional followed up their 2014 state title with another PIAA Class AAA crown with a slim victory over District 3 champion Cumberland Valley. The Panthers are only the sixth team from District 7 to win a PIAA team wrestling championship in the 17 years of the event. North Allegheny picked up four wins over two days to advance to the Class AAA Consolation Finals where they fell big to Bethlehem Catholic. In Class AA, District 3 champion Boiling Springs captured their first ever team wrestling state gold Saturday afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey.Scholastic Notebook – 02/06/2015

Penn State football coach James Franklin lost out on the top player in the WPIAL class of 2015 when Central Valley’s Jordan Whitehead signed with Pitt. Other than Whitehead, Penn State had plenty of success in the WPIAL. At least more than the Nittany Lions have had in recent history. Penn State signed four players from the WPIAL this season. That might not seem like a lot, but it is more than the past four classes combined. In fact, only twice in the past 10 years has Penn State landed four or more players from the WPIAL.
