We officially kick into the spring high school and college sports season with snow in this final week of March this week here on the MSA Sports Network. Only Beaver Falls survived the State Semifinals as fellow WPIAL members New Castle, Montour and Lincoln Park all came up just short in their quest to play for a boys basketball title in Hershey. So the Tigers ended up alone, but they carried the District 7 banner high and proud as they captured their fourth PIAA boys basketball crown and first state title since 2005. The WPIAL captured half of the PIAA girls basketball championships as the finals returned to the GIANT Center in Hershey for the first time since 2006. The state championships won by South Park and Bishop Canevin mark the first time since 2005 when Oakland Catholic won in AAAA and Serra Catholic in A. While the Eagles in AAA and Crusaders in AA won first time state crowns, Vincentian Academy had to settle for silver when they fell in the Class A title game. North Allegheny and Latrobe Win 2013 Pennsylvania Cup State Hockey Titles
Last year, the Pennsylvania Cup Championships were played the day after the PIHL Penguins Cup Finals and Quaker Valley was the only west team to win. This year, there were two days between the PIHL and PA Cup championships and Quaker Valley was the only west team that did NOT win. North Allegheny, Latrobe & Quaker Valley Win 2013 PIHL Penguins Cups
Quaker Valley was the only team to successfully defend their turf in 2013 as the Quakers won the PIHL Penguins Cup Class A championship for a second straight year. Quaker Valley beat Mars to remain perfect this season and up their winning streak to 46 in a row. In Class AA, Latrobe returned to the top with a 5-0 shutout victory over Pine-Richland, giving the Wildcats their fourth Penguins Cup title in the last six years. Another shutout was pitched in the Class AAA finals as North Allegheny handed Peters Township their third straight Penguins Cup Championship game loss in a 2-0 victory that gives NA their second crown and first since 2007.
Lower Merion Ends Chester’s Reign As PIAA Quad-A Champs

The weekend ended in Hershey as the PIAA Basketball Championships came to a conclusion with an exciting Quad A Boys title game. The move back to Chocolate Town was a success at the box office as 24,582 attended this year's eight title games, up almost 10 thousand from last year's championships at the Bryce Jordan Center.Here is a recap of the Lower Merion victory:Lower Merion Aces 63 - Chester Clippers 47The Aces ended the two year reign of the Clippers with the victory in the PIAA Boys Quad-A championship at GIANT Center on Saturday night. The Aces have now won seven state titles, it’s the first since 2006. Syracuse recruit B.J. Johnson led all scorers with 22 points and snagged 11 rebounds to lead the Aces.
South Park Wins First PIAA Girls Basketball Gold

The South Park Eagles controlled the game from the start in taking home their first PIAA Class AAA Girls Basketball championship with a 53-38 victory over the Bethlehem Catholic Golden Hawks. Senior Shelby Lindsay closed out her career with a 20 point performance, besting her season average of 18 points per game.The Eagles closed the first quarter with an 8-0 run, helped by threes from Lindsay and Halie Torris. South Park extended the lead to 14 as Lindsay exploded with 9 points in the quarter. South Park did it defensively as well in the opening half, forcing 9 turnovers and held Bethlehem Catholic to 7 of 27 from the field.
Beaver Falls Golden In Hershey With Victory in Class AA Boys Title Game
Very rarely does a player get a second chance to ice a game but that’s what Drew Cook got for Beaver Falls this afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey. Cook missed two free throws in the final minute, but a Zachery Miller offensive rebound, set Cook up for that second chance. He buried both free throws, cinching a 69-63 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders in the PIAA Boys AA Championship Game. The win was the 18th straight for Beaver Falls, who finished at 28-3 overall.
Tri-Valley Knocks Off Vincentian Academy in PIAA Girls A Title Tilt
It was not to be for the Vincentian Academy Royals as the two time WPIAL champions fell to the Tri-Valley Bulldogs 59-42 at the GIANT Center in Hershey in the PIAA Class A Girls Basketball title game. Jili Weber and Tara Nahodil each scored 19 points as the District 11 champions claimed their first PIAA title.Tri-Valley pulled away in the second half, using a 12-0 run to end the third quarter, Vincentian Academy trailed by two points at 33-31 but did not score again in the frame. Nahodil scored 10 points in the quarter, she matched her season average of 18.5 points per game.

Friday's action is in the books with Philadelphia Vaux going out in style in the Class A Boys Championship, Imhotep Charter takes home their third straight title, this time in Class AAA Boys and Spring-Ford wins the Quad A Girls title.Here are recaps of ALL the games from Friday:CLASS A BOYS: Philadelphia Vaux Cougars 83 – Johnsonburg Rams 63 Playing their final game in basketball, the Cougars went out on top as District 12 and now PIAA champions with the win over the District 9 champion Rams on Friday.
Bishop Canevin Claims PIAA Gold in Hershey in Class AA Girls Championship
The Bishop Canevin Crusaders claimed their first ever PIAA Class AA basketball championship with a furious rally in the fourth quarter to defeat the York Catholic Fighting Irish 45-38 at the Giant Center in Hershey on Friday afternoon.Seniors Carly Forse and Celina DiPietro each scored 18 points to lead Bishop Canevin. The Crusaders trailed 33-28 heading to the fourth quarter but scored 13 straight points in the fourth, holding the Fighting Irish scoreless thru the first six minutes of the final frame.York Catholic fell in the title game for the second straight year and fourth in the last five years. The loss for the Fighting Irish ended a 7 game winning streak this season and a 9 game winning streak at the Giant Center.
North Allegheny Rolls In Third Period To Claim Class AAA Penguins Cup Crown

The North Allegheny Tigers got two third period goals from Joe Griffin to claim the 2013 Class AAA PIHL Penguins Cup with a 2-0 victory over the Peters Township Indians Wednesday night at Consol Energy Center. Bradford Thornburgh stopped all 20 shots he faced to pick up the shutout win, his first of the playoffs and fourth of the season.It's the second Penguins Cup Championship for the Tigers, North Allegheny claimed the crown in 2007.
Latrobe Golden In PIHL Class AA Title Game

Latrobe got yet another outstanding performance in a stellar goaltending career by senior Shane Brudnock as the Wildcats added a fourth PIHL Penguin Cup Championship to their High School mantle with a 5-0 blanking of the Pine-Richland Rams in the Class AA championship game. Brudnock stopped all 24 Pine Richland shots that he faced for his 2nd post-season shutout and fifth of the season.
Twice Is Nice For Quaker Valley as They Win PIHL Class A Title Again
The Quaker Valley Quakers continued their winning ways, taking the PIHL Class A Penguins Cup championship for a second straight year with a 5-1 victory over the Mars Planets at Consol Energy Center. Jimmy Perkins scored two goals to lead the Quakers, who have now won 32 straight games and are unbeaten in their last 55. It was the third time that Quaker Valley defeated Mars this season, besting the Planets 5-2 and 4-0 and fifth overall, with 7-0 and 4-2 in last year’s title match.PIHL Penguins Cup Championship Blog 2013

The winter high school sports season comes to an end just as the spring sports season begins as winter officially turns to spring this week here on the MSA Sports Network. Half of the finalists from the 2012 PIHL Class AAA title game are returning for the 2013 Penguins Cup championship contest. Peters Township is back in after blanking State College, however defending champion Bethel Park fell just short after losing the rubber game of their three games this season to North Allegheny.
