JOHNSTOWN — Bishop Guilfoyle sophomore forward Meggie Ritchey scored the winning goal in double overtime to advance the Marauders to their first PIAA Class A final Tuesday at Price Field.

Hailey Degol brought pressure by threatening a shot from inside the box. Her shot was blocked and rolled out to Ritchie, who launched a kick over everyone’s heads and into the top-left corner of the net for the game-winner.

“This was do or die,” Ritchey said after the win. “You either made it, or you didn’t. I did, and now we’re going to states.”

The District 6 champions now have won 12 straight matches and have outscored opponents 9-1 in the state playoffs.

Springdale bested Bishop Guilfoyle in last year’s state quarterfinals 2-1, but the Dynamos fell short again after making the semifinals for the second consecutive season.

“I’m just really proud of them for the season that we had,” Springdale coach Marc Bentley said. “Coming in third in the WPIAL and still being out here competing in all three state games, we went into overtime, just incredibly proud of the season.”

Bishop Guilfoyle tilted the field from the beginning of the match. The Marauders had five shots to Springdale’s two in the first half, along with several scoring opportunities on three corner kicks.

Despite the possession time, Springdale was the first to get on the board when the Dynamos traveled through the middle of the field, and a pass found Hailey Marchlewski, who then kicked a grounder into the bottom-left corner of the net.

The Marauders continued to apply pressure to answer the score but were unable to find the back of the net and trailed 1-0 heading into halftime.

Bishop Guilfoyle coach Joe DeLeo said his team was disappointed that it couldn’t capitalize on the lopsided possession time and encouraged the Marauders to keep their composure in the second half.

“They were a little more downtrodden than I would have liked,” DeLeo said. “Once the captains started talking to them, I think they got it.”

Bishop Guilfoyle continued to find opportunities to open the second half, but the Dynamos’ defense wouldn’t budge. That was until the 14-minute mark when Emma Marasco knifed her way through the middle of Springdale’s defense, off a pass from Degol, and headed left to rocket a shot into the net to tie the score.

Both sides had some scoring opportunities at the end of regulation. Springdale had two chances off the foot of Marchlewski, one being a shot and the other being a pass to create an opportunity for Tessa Derringer, but Rumfola shut down both tries.

The Dynamos nearly sealed the game in the first overtime when a deep kick snuck past CeCe Rumfola, but she recovered and swatted the ball near the goal line.

“I had to have the mentality that I had to go for everything,” Rumfola said. “My mentality is to just go for everything and dive for everything. After that first goal, I really had to make up for it.”

The late-game saves kept Bishop Guilfoyle alive and eventually set up Ritchey’s game-winning opportunity to advance to the state title game.

“We’re really excited,” DeLeo said. “We’re going to enjoy this for a couple of hours, and then we’re going to start preparing for Faith Christian.”
