Springdale is getting ready to enter the second phase of its boys basketball coaching search.
Athletic director Ray Davis said interviews will begin next week for the position, vacant after former coach Seth Thompson stepped down in May. The hope is to have a new coach approved at the district's regular board meeting in late August, Davis said.
Davis said 14 candidates applied for the position, with 12 confirmed for interviews.
“The pool of applicants is pretty good,” he said.
Springdale's junior varsity and varsity teams still are playing in Western Pennsylvania summer leagues, with various volunteers stepping in to coach. However, the team can't hold on-campus open gyms until a permanent coach is named, Davis said.
Thompson resigned in May after seven seasons as coach, including four playoff appearances.
