Catherine Jewart, a basketball and golf standout at Shady Side Academy, is preparing for her final go-round on the SSA golf team.
“I have been playing competitive golf since freshman year, but years before that, my brother and dad got me interested, so when I was little I would go out with them,” she said. “I'm looking forward to this season.”
As a sophomore, she was a part of the SSA team that won the school's fourth PIAA championship. Though they didn't repeat last year, Jewart felt it was a good season.
“We lost a lot of talent coming into last season, but our senior captains, Alexandra Muracca and Elizabeth Walsh, really stepped up,” Jewart said.
Jewart has been hitting the golf course as often as she can.
“Basketball takes up a lot of my time, but I try to golf two or three times a week if I can,” she said. “I feel that my drives are the strong point of my game, and I've been working on improving my putting.”
She hasn't chosen a college yet but plans to major in biology.
“I've been looking at smaller colleges in the Ohio area with a campus,” she said. “I don't think I'll be trying out for the golf team, but I'll probably end up joining a club team at some point. I'm hoping to play basketball in college.”
Jewart averaged 10 points and four assists for SSA last season.
Her focus now is on a successful season for the golf team.
“I think we will be all right,” she said. “We have a lot of young talent coming in.”
