Title-winning football coach Rod Steele, who celebrated a state championship at Steel Valley, is the new coach at Bishop Canevin.

The school announced the move Thursday.

Steele spent the past six seasons at West Mifflin after a nine-year stint at Steel Valley, where his teams won two WPIAL titles and a PIAA championship. His career record is 101-62.

At Bishop Canevin, Steele replaces coach Rich Johnson, who resigned last month after five seasons.

The Crusaders are coming off a 9-3 season and an appearance in the WPIAL Class A semifinals. The team went 49-12 in five seasons under Johnson and won a WPIAL title in 2021.

Bishop Canevin reached at least the WPIAL semifinals in each of the past four seasons.

Steele led West Mifflin to three WPIAL playoff berths in his six seasons there, but the school opened his coaching job to applicants after last season. He went 27-34 overall with the Titans.

In 2016, Steele led Steel Valley to a 15-0 record along with WPIAL and PIAA Class 2A titles. The Ironmen became the first PIAA team to win every game under the 35-point mercy rule.

Steel Valley also won a WPIAL title in 2018.

Bishop Canevin needs a new boys basketball coach, as well. Aaron McGee, who took over as coach late in the 2023-24 season, announced his resignation Monday on social media.
