Chicks Picks – Week Five – 2014
September 25, 2014
Welcome to Week 5 of the high school football season. Becoming a local celebrity has its perks, and Chick’s Picks was set to enjoy yet another last weekend.  The resident WPIAL football prognosticator was asked by the Pittsburgh Pirates to throw out the first pitch Saturday night when they took on the Brewers.  Chick’s Picks did not hesitate to accept the offer, especially considering the tremendous success the Pirates have had this season. Game night arrived.  Chick’s Picks was escorted onto the field by the Pirates PR staff.  As she stepped onto the mound, she took it all in—the bright lights, the sellout crowd of over 37,000 fans, and even the famous Pirates Pierogies.  Then, the nerves set in.

WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Five – 09/24/2014
September 24, 2014
Welcome to week five of Big Game Hunting. Before we get started a word from our sponsor (yours truly). I am already on the record with regard to this issue but it seems I am the lone voice crying out in the wilderness. I hate the seven o’clock starts! There seems to be an overwhelming movement towards them and it is very frustrating. Why is the hurry that already consumes our everyday lives being allowed to worm its way into my favorite thing? I find it despicable, truly. There I have gotten that off my chest and since I know holding my breath and stomping my feet will not help I will just go Big Game Hunting. Super-irritated by the fact that three of the four-pack are of the shameful seven o’clock start variety.

August 19, 2014
2013 was another great season in the Midwestern Athletic Conference as Aliquippa made their sixth straight trip to Heinz Field. Overall, the Quips have won three titles in that time and fifteen overall. Beaver and Beaver Falls also had outstanding seasons, again making the trip on the Highway to Heinz. Also qualifying for the first time since 2003 were the New Brighton Lions. 2014 should prove to be a good season as well. The MAC gets some new members as Laurel rejoins the conference and the Summit Academy moves in from the Allegheny. Here is a preview of all the teams and the predicted order of finish: ALIQUIPPA QUIPS:

If you look at the three sports of football, basketball and baseball, Baldwin has been more like Baldloss the past few years. But finally, the baseball team is putting the win back in Baldwin. Things have been absolutely perfect so far this spring for the Baldwin baseball team. The Highlanders have a perfect 7-0 record after a 13-3 victory over Gateway on Saturday. This winning is new for the three teams of football, basketball and baseball at Baldwin. There hasn’t been a winning season in those three major sports since the basketball team went 14-8 in the 2009-10 season and the baseball team went 12-6 in the 2010 season. The football team hasn’t had a winning season since 2003.

Mars High School was built in 1918. So you could say it took almost 100 years for Mars to win a basketball section title outright. Now, Mars is on the verge of winning two sections in two years. Mars plays at Knoch Friday night in a big WPIAL Class AAA Section 1 game. Mars leads the section with a 10-1 record and is guaranteed at least a share of the section championship. Knoch is 9-2 in section and Indiana 9-2. But a Mars victory will give the Planets the section title outright. The first time they won a section title outright was last year and the Planets also made it to the WPIAL semifinals for the first time in school history.

In 24 hours, basketball player Anthony Richards went from making nothing – to the New Castle record books. It was one of the oddest starts to a season you’ll see from a player, a Jekyll and Hyde thing for Richards, a 5-foot-7 senior guard at New Castle who has been a starter on two WPIAL championship teams. The season started Friday and Richards went scoreless in a victory against West Middlesex. It was hard to believe from one of the best shooters in the WPIAL. He also was 0 for 2 from the free-throw line. But the next night was a totally different story. Richards was “unconscious” from the field, making a school-record nine 3-pointers as New Castle crushed Perry, 88-34. Richards scored all of his 27 points on 3-pointers.

The weather for the WPIAL football championships Saturday is not good. The forecast is for cold, possible snow showers and winds gusting to 20 m.p.h. But for half of the four title games, the outlook looks absolutely perfect. Never mind the weather, two of the games match perfect teams – and that is a pretty unusual occurrence. Sto-Rox meets North Catholic for the WPIAL Class A title at 11 and Aliquippa takes on South Fayette for the AA championship at 5. All four teams in those games have perfect 12-0 records.
