It is funny isn’t it? How every year near then end of summer the smell of freshly cut grass just starts to smell like football? Doesn’t smell like that in the springtime. I wonder how that works. I am glad it works that way, and I am delighted that it is time to crank up the Big Game Hunting for another WPIAL football season! CTK 2013 – WPIAL Double-A Midwestern Conference Preview

The Aliquippa Quips continued their dominance of Class AA with another WPIAL championship in 2012. The win was the fifteenth title in school history and the second of back to back gold footballs for the Quips.Aliquippa is likely the favorite once again in both the Midwestern and the classification, a huge challenge could come from their old rivals, the Beaver Falls Tigers, who are also in everyone’s top 5 to start the season. Could it be another Beaver County matchup at Heinz Field in November, stay tuned to the MSA Sports Network to see.Here is a look at the Midwestern Conference.

CTK 2013 – MSA SPORTS PRESEASON ELITE ELEVEN

The leading rusher and leading passer in the WPIAL are back this season – and also lead the MSA Sports preseason Elite 11 team. The Elite 11 is a list of the top elite players in the WPIAL heading into the 2013 season. It is picked by the MSA Sports staff and players are selected regardless of position. The leading rusher returning from last year is Washington’s Shai McKenzie. The leading passer is South Fayette quarterback Brett Brumbaugh. Brumbaugh is the only junior on the preseason Elite 11. This year’s Elite 11 also includes three players (Mike Grimm, Malik Hooker and Chase Winovich) who already have made commitments to Division I colleges, as well as other players who are being heavily recruited.

WPIAL Coaching Changes

Three district coaching vacancies have been filled as a new football coach was hired at a Class A school while boys basketball coaches were appointed at a Class AAAA school and a Class AA powerhouse.*  The change on the coaching staff at Carmichaels was more a switch of titles than anything else. John Menhart ended his second stint as head coach of the Mighty Mikes (1989-2002 and (2009-2012) after last season and will become an assistant coach at Carmichaels. So it only seemed right to take one of his assistants and slide them into the leadership role. Offensive coordinator Ryan Krull has been named new head coach of the Mighty Mikes, keeping it all in the family. Krull is Menhart's son-in-law.

North Allegheny, Clairton, Erie Prep & Wyomissing Win 2012 PIAA Football Titles

The West ended up going 3-1 against the East in the PIAA football championships in 2012. The Clairton Bears finished off a third straight 16-0 season with a fourth consecutive PIAA Class A state football championship. The win extends the longest high school football winning streak in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania to 63 in a row. Erie Cathedral Prep won the Class AAA state title while North Allegheny made it two Class AAAA state crowns in the last three years. Only Aliquippa came up three points short of a clean sweep for the WPIAL and Western Pa. Here are ALL of the final results form the 2012 PIAA Football Playoffs. All games marked with (MSA) can be heard archived on the MSA Sports Network.

Wyomissing Beats Aliquippa In State AA Battle Of Unbeatens
December 15, 2012
In a battle of unbeaten teams, the Wyomissing Spartans won their first ever PIAA football championship with a 17-14 victory over the WPIAL champion Aliquippa Quips on Saturday at Hersheypark Stadium.Wyomissing dodged some bullets early in the contest and forced Aliquippa to come up empty four times in the red zone in the contest. Mason Smith ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. The Spartans defense was in a true bend but not break mode, allowed Aliquippa to run for 323 yards but stopping the Quips when they needed to. Jonah Bowman set a state championship record with a 52 yard field goal in the third quarter for the Spartans.
