You know the saying. April showers bring May flowers and Seneca Valley blooms. OK, so the last few words aren’t part of the saying. But in WPIAL baseball lately, it fits. If Reggie Jackson used to be Mr. October, then Seneca Valley coach Eric Semega is Mr. May. Seneca Valley has made it to the WPIAL Class AAAA title game four years in a row. The Raiders are believed to be the first team in almost 100 years to make the championship four consecutive seasons. Allegheny High School won six consecutive titles from 1917-22. The WPIAL baseball playoffs start next week, and a natural question is will be a drive for five for Seneca Valley?
Brashear Is Golden in City League Title Game

The Brashear Bulls claimed their tenth Pittsburgh City League football championship in a convincing way with a 42-14 victory over the Allderdice Dragons Saturday afternoon at Cupples Stadium. Quarterback Therron Coleman was named the game’s MVP, going six of eight for 56 yards through the air and rushing for 62 yards and a score in the win. The win avenges a 36-0 loss to the Dragons in week 4.Scholastic Notebook – 10/31/2014

The Southmoreland football team failed to make the WPIAL football postseason again. The Scotties haven’t been to the playoffs since 1979, the longest current drought in the WPIAL. But there are some other playoff droughts that are notable as the WPIAL playoffs get under way Friday with 32 games around the area. Three teams in the postseason have never won a WPIAL playoff game. Never, ever, ever. They are Laurel Highlands, Mapletown and Altoona. Altoona is a little deceiving. The school re-joined the WPIAL for football only a few years ago. But the school played in the WPIAL a long time ago. Altoona has played in only two previous WPIAL playoff games. The last was in 2012. The first was in 1969 when Altoona lost to Gateway in the WPIAL final.CTK ’14: Pittsburgh City League Preview

The Pittsburgh City League once again is a six pack. This is the third consecutive year that the City League will have only six teams. The closing of some schools has shrunk the league drastically in the past few years. Oliver and Langley closed after the 2011-12 school year. Only 10 years ago, the City League had nine teams. The City League almost dropped to five teams this season. Westinghouse had asked the WPIAL to join its league, but the WPIAL turned down Westinghouse’s request. In the end, the Eagles and Dragons split the gold. After Pittsburgh Obama Academy knocked off Allderdice Friday in the girls basketball title game, the Dragons returned the favor by edging the Eagles in the boys finals on Saturday afternoon, ending Obama's unbeaten season. 2013 was the Year of the Bulldogs in District 8 high school hoops after Westinghouse swept bot the boys and girls basketball championships. 2014 could be either the Year of the Eagles OR the Year of the Dragons as both Pittsburgh Obama Academy and Allderdice have made it to the boys and girls City League title game. It was a pretty big deal this fall when Sto-Rox’s Lenny Williams became the WPIAL all-time leading passer. But it’s looking like Williams’ record might not last more than a year. South Fayette’s Brett Brumbaugh appears to have a very good shot at Williams’ record next year. Let’s look at the numbers and the possibilities: Williams, a senior, finished his career with 8,508 yards. Besides that being the best in WPIAL history, it also was fifth-best in state history. Sto-Rox lost lost last week in the WPIAL Class A finals and the loss means Williams can’t add more distance between himself and Brumbaugh.Scholastic Notebook – 10/18/2013

These are the days of spread offenses and pass-happy teams in WPIAL football. It’s not often you see a team average over 300 yards a game on the ground.But in the next two weeks, two of the top games in the WPIAL will match teams that average more than 300 yards a game rushing. It is definitely unusual. And if you think running the football is not important any more, consider that all four of the teams involved in those games enter Week 8 with perfect records.Aliquippa plays at Beaver Falls in a big WPIAL Class AA Midwestern game tonight, matching two teams that average more than 300 yards a game rushing. In a year when the Pirates ended a long playoff drought, a long WPIAL football playoff drought could end for one school.Avella in the WPIAL playoffs. It’s likely to happen.Avella takes a 4-0 record (5-0 overall) into Friday night’s game against Frazier. No matter what happens Friday night and in the final three games, Avella stands an excellent chance to make the playoffs. The last time the Eagles were in the playoffs was 1976.Avella’s playoff drought is the current longest in the WPIAL. For the second year in a row, Pittsburgh City League football will be a nice little six pack.With the closure of Oliver, Peabody, Langley and Schenley in recent years, the City League is down six teams. Last year was the first season with only six teams and Perry defeated University Prep for the title.One of the problems with having only six teams is that teams have experienced some trouble getting a nine-game schedule. Last year was the first year that the WPIAL scheduled all nine games for WPIAL teams. In the past, the WPIAL did not schedule season openers. It was up to WPIAL schools to play whoever they wanted. Thus, some WPIAL teams played a City League team in the opener.
