When you settle in and listen to the halftime show featuring Don Rebel and Professor White this Friday, we will have reached the exact halfway point of the 2013 WPIAL football season. It’s true, it goes by faster than a Pittsburgh Steelers offensive possession. On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon for high school football, nine district teams took to the field in an effort to keep the high school offense going that began on Thursday and continued big time on Friday. For the most part, those teams did no t disappoint as six of the nine scores 20 points or more. One record setting streak ended in the Eastern Conference last fall while another overall slide continues into this 2013 campaign.While all eyes were on Clairton’s WPIAL and PIAA record winning streak, the longest losing streak in WPIAL history came to an end last fall when West Shamokin finally put a game in the ‘W’ column. The Wolves snapped a 46-game, five year losing streak that dated back to 2007 when they knocked off the Riverview Raiders 25-6 in Week 3. One of the winningest coaches in WPIAL history is out, and a team with the longest losing streak in WPIAL history is in. Such is the saga of the Eastern Conference this year. Gone from the Eastern Conference is Chuck Wagner, the former Springdale coach who retired after last season. Wagner was a head coach in the WPIAL for 47 seasons and his 270 wins is fourth on the all-time WPIAL list. New to the Eastern Conference this year is West Shamokin, which dropped down from Class AA. The Wolves have a 44-game losing streak, longest in WPIAL history. Overall, there are nine teams in the Eastern Conference. Besides West Shamokin, Apollo-Ridge also is new to the conference, dropping down from Class AA.
