2016 MSA SPORTS ELITE ELEVEN

The Elite 11 was into breaking records. A number of players on this year’s Elite 11 broke records, whether they were WPIAL marks or school records. The team is made up of the top 11 players in the WPIAL and is picked by the MSA Sports staff. This year’s team is made up of 10 seniors and one junior. Four of the players were quarterbacks and another played quarterback a little. The team includes three of the top six WPIAL rushers of all time and two of the top three touchdown makers of all time. Other players accomplished things never seen before in the WPIAL. A number of the players have already made their college choices and this year’s team is “Zane-y.” Two of the players are named Zane. When Ron Sciarro became Riverside’s coach this year, he changed the playing style of the Panthers. They went from a pass-happy team to one that throws only 13 times a game. But there has been one other drastic change for Riverside. It deals with the number in the wins column. After going 3-6 last year, Riverside is 7-2 this season and headed to the WPIAL Class AA playoffs. Various things were at stake around the WPIAL gridirons on the final Friday of October and the regular season. There were conference championships to be won, home field advantage in the opening round to be signed, sealed and delivered, and of course there were teams just trying to clinch a ride on The Highway to Heinz OR The Road to RMU. Whatever was on the line, these players performed at a high level and helped their team to victory and proving they are ready for some Postseason Primetime. While the weather outside was frightful (including a game postponed until Saturday), the play of some on the slick turf or the muddy grass was downright delightful as these WPIAL football players proved Eddie Rabbit correct as they all Loved a Rainy Night. Steady to heavy rain throughout the day and into game time did nothing to slow these guys from leading their team to victory in Week Eight. Wonderful weather made for an excellent start to the MSA 'Stretch Run' to this high school football regular season. an old children's song contained the lyrics, "bend and stretch, reach for the stars." Well these players took those words to heart and were shining bright on the gridiron in leading their teams to key victories with the scent of postseason noticeably in the air. At least in two respects, there has never been a fall sports season like this at Derry Area High School. The Derry football team is perfect and the girls soccer team is headed to the postseason. No one has ever been able to say those two things before. Derry’s football team is 7-0. The last time Derry was 7-0 was 1983. That year, the Trojans lost their eighth game to Greensburg Central Catholic. Derry will try to go 8-0 with a win against Ellwood City Friday. Derry has never had a regular season with a perfect record. Derry Township had a perfect record in the 1930s, but that was before the school merged with Derry Borough to form Derry Area.Big Game Hunting for Week Seven 2016

The second half of the WPIAL football season began with a BANG...albeit a very wet bang. Or in the case of Class 3-A Allegheny Conference front running Keystone Oaks, the second half began with a POWE, as in newly eligible wide receiver Quran Powe. While he had a nice debut, it was his signal calling teammate who was one of the Week 6 standouts in a rainy edition of the HighLights. Let's begin to tip our drenched caps. It seems dual-threat quarterbacks are all the rage in high school football these days, from Western Pennsylvania to all around the country. Just take a look at the leading rushers in the WPIAL to see the effects that dual-threat QBs are having. Among the top 25 rushers in the WPIAL, four are quarterbacks – and two of the top seven are quarterbacks. Beaver quarterback Darius Wise is third in the WPIAL in rushing with 1,093 yards. Burrell’s Max Garda is seventh with 791. Wise is averaging 11 yards a carry. After those two, McGuffey’s Marcus Czulewicz is 15th with 702 yards rushing and North Allegheny’s Ethan Maenza 23rd with 584 yards, and he missed a game with an injury.Freeport Yellow Jackets Hometown Volleyball Broadcast Recap – 10/06/2016

The 4A standout Armstrong River Hawks traveled to Freeport on Wednesday night to face The Freeport Yellow Jackets. A 2A conference team doesn’t seem like the proper title for Freeport as they gave Armstrong everything they could handle. Armstrong took the match in 4 competitive sets (27-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-17). This non-conference bout featured two teams who already looked primed and prepared toward the WPIAL Playoffs.
