Crazy...kooky...strange...horror. Those are all word that are usually associated with Friday the 13th. With a chill in the air, those words came to life on the football fields around Southwestern Pennsylvania with some strange results and some serious injuries. Even though the numbers of teams that play their home games primarily on Saturday in the WPIAL shrunk from eight to five this season, it was a busy opening Saturday around the WPIAL with seven games. Youth was served last year in the Tri-County South Conference. Of the 24 positions for first-team all-conference last year, 16 were filled by sophomores. Those players are a year older, which means the Tri-County South could be a little stronger. Last year was the first of the “new” Tri-County South. That basically meant Monessen no longer was in the conference. The Tri-County South did not fare well in the postsesaon as all four teams lost in the first round. Will the conference get to taste any postseason success this year? The only bad thing about a jam-packed Friday night of high school football is that it leaves the Saturday district schedule a tad light. That was the case in Week Five with only THREE WPIAL football games, all on the Class A level. At the end of the season, we won’t be looking back at Week 4 as one of “those” weeks with dramatic moments, miracle finishes and big games. In fact, 62 of the 67 games were decided by at least two touchdowns. Regardless, we were able to sift through the blowouts and find the three most meaningful plays from the weekend. #1 Avella Eagles 26 - Jefferson-Morgan Rockets 21
