Beaver Falls High School is trying to make sure the school’s 1975 baseball team won’t be forgotten. At a baseball game in two weeks, the ’75 team that won a WPIAL title will be honored before a Beaver Falls game. No one is quite ready to call this year’s Beaver Falls team championship caliber, but the Tigers are doing a pretty good job of grabbing some attention for themselves. It’s still extremely early in the WPIAL baseball season, but Beaver Falls is 3-0. That might not sound like much, but considering the past few years, it is a gigantic step forward for Beaver Falls.

One of the busiest high school football Saturday's in the WPIAL took place on the seventh Saturday thanks to Homecoming festivities at Ambridge, Shady Side Academy, Beaver and Burgettown high schools. Plus normal Saturday action at Summit Academy, Riverview and Western Beaver gave us plenty to choose from when 'Stretching' for the starz of the day. We hit the midway point of the 2014 WPIAL football regular season with points a plenty. Offenses around the district continue to amass record setting numbers with good solid defenses creeping closer to the endangered species list. Friday night saw 12 teams score over 50 points and five of those teams eclipsed the 60 point plateau. And that doesn't even include the traditional 70+ point total for Clairton. See I told you it goes by quickly, I am just about set for week one and here is week three! The weather man says it will feel a lot more like football this weekend. Before we go Big Game Hunting a shout out to the defenses! We here at BGH are lovers of the defensive side of the ball. Despite the fact that all the gang at the network refer to us as “offensive”, sometimes right to our faces, we appreciate the big stops in the big spots. 2013 was another great season in the Midwestern Athletic Conference as Aliquippa made their sixth straight trip to Heinz Field. Overall, the Quips have won three titles in that time and fifteen overall. Beaver and Beaver Falls also had outstanding seasons, again making the trip on the Highway to Heinz. Also qualifying for the first time since 2003 were the New Brighton Lions. 2014 should prove to be a good season as well. The MAC gets some new members as Laurel rejoins the conference and the Summit Academy moves in from the Allegheny. Seneca Valley has been the surprise team of the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs. The Raiders are the No. 16 seed, but find themselves in the semifinals. One more win and Seneca Valley will make history, but not because of their seeding. Seneca Valley plays Pine-Richland in a semifinal game Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. A win will put Seneca Valley into the championship game for the fourth year in a row. It has been at least 50 years since a team made it to a title game four consecutive years. In fact, it is likely that no team has ever made it to a championship four years in a row. So far in the playoffs, Seneca Valley has knocked off No. 1 seed Hempfield, 10-5, and also No. 9 seed Shaler, 3-0. Smith Does it AllScholastic Notebook – 11/29/2013

It was a pretty big deal this fall when Sto-Rox’s Lenny Williams became the WPIAL all-time leading passer. But it’s looking like Williams’ record might not last more than a year. South Fayette’s Brett Brumbaugh appears to have a very good shot at Williams’ record next year. Let’s look at the numbers and the possibilities: Williams, a senior, finished his career with 8,508 yards. Besides that being the best in WPIAL history, it also was fifth-best in state history. Sto-Rox lost lost last week in the WPIAL Class A finals and the loss means Williams can’t add more distance between himself and Brumbaugh.Chicks Picks – Week 12 – 2013

Welcome to Week 12. We have reached the final stop on the Highway to Heinz. Keeping with tradition, Chick’s Picks stopped by her favorite uptown pizza shop, as she does each football season at this time. After placing her usual order for the college special, Chick’s Picks sat down to ponder her predictions over the delicious meal.Something caught her eye from across the way. Sure enough, it was The Fumbler—dining over the same meal, pondering his own picks. Week 12 of the WPIAL 2013 football season arrives this Friday, and as a great man once said, “It’s déjà vu all over again”. We have the exact same final four teams alive in the smallest classification, a rematch of the championship game in AA, three of the final four from last year’s AAA tournament and a rematch in one of the AAAA semis from a year ago as well. Truthfully I could almost copy and paste last year’s Big Game Hunting for the semis right onto this page, but I only copy from the best, and since Don Rebel has not written anything yet regarding the 2013 semis. This will be a fresh edition of Big Game Hunting.
