May 28, 2015
The Belle Vernon Leopards had one out in the bottom of the seventh of the Class AAA championship game with no runners on base and trailed 4-1. Five batters later the Leopards had a 5-4 victory after a two-run single by Emily Frederick capped a four-run rally to give Belle Vernon (20-2) its 17th straight win and its first WPIAL championship since 2007.  "This is so unreal," Frederick said after the game seemingly trying to grasp what just transpired at California University of Pennsylvania's Lilley Field . It opened some eyes in October when Bailey Parshall accepted a scholarship from the Penn State softball team. Parshall is a freshman and when she accepted the scholarship, she had yet to pitch an inning in high school. But after a month of the WPIAL softball season, it has become clear why Penn State went after Parshall. Parshall already has established herself as one of the WPIAL’s top pitchers – as a ninth-grader. In the latest WPIAL statistics published by the Post-Gazette, Parshall leads the WPIAL in strikeouts with 115 and she is tied for the WPIAL lead in wins. She has a 10-1 record. Chartiers-Houston’s Kaitlyn Dittrich also is 10-1.

Belle Vernon scored an unearned run on a Nicole Ashcroft infield single, after an error on pitcher Amber Cook’s throw to second. After two outs, Lacey Washowich tripled over the head of right fielder Riley Carr for the three run advantage after a half inning. West Mifflin had a chance to score with two outs in the bottom of the inning but Tiana Sekowski struck out to end the inning.

CTK ’14: WPIAL AAA Big Nine Conference Preview
August 16, 2014
The WPIAL realigned football conferences for this season, but the Big Nine stayed absolutely the same. Look for the conference race to stay the same as it has for a number of years. In other words, look for Thomas Jefferson on top. Thomas Jefferson has won or tied for the conference title eight consecutive seasons. The last time a team other than Thomas Jefferson won the title outright was West Mifflin in 2005. Many project Thomas Jefferson as the team to beat. Ringgold could challenge, though. A few teams have new coaches this season. Here is a look at all of the teams in the Big Nine: ALBERT GALLATIN COLONIALS

Football is only four months away and basketball ended only last month. But the coaching wheels are turning in both sports. There were a number of coaching moves this week in the WPIAL, some of them noteworthy. Here are some coaching happenings this week. In football: * Deer Lakes turned to a former NFL player as its new coach. Steve Sciullo takes over a team that did not win a game last season. Sciullo graduated from Shaler in 1988 and then played at Marshall before playing offensive line in the NFL for a few seasons. He has been an assistant coach at Hampton. * Norwin hired Dave Brozeski. He has been an assistant at Norwin for the past 17 years.

CTK 2013 – WPIAL Triple-A Big Nine Conference Preview
August 16, 2013
The Big Nine Conference the past two years has been about the Big Two – Thomas Jefferson and West Mifflin. Don’t look for things to change this year. It seems just about everyone thinks Thomas Jefferson and West Mifflin will be the top teams in the conference again this season, with Thomas Jefferson holding the upper hand. Thomas Jefferson beat West Mifflin in the regular-season finale last year. Two years ago, they tied for the conference title. Thomas Jefferson has won the conference title outright nine times since 2002 and looks strong again. Elizabeth Forward made some waves last year, finishing third in the conference race.
