PIAA Team Wrestling Playoffs – Day Two Recap

All three WPIAL Class AAA teams remain alive at the PIAA Team Wrestling Championships, but only one will bring home the hardware from Hershey's GIANT Center. Belle Vernon lost Friday evening in the semifinals in a much anticipated showdown with the state's top-ranked team. As a result, the Leopards drop to the consolation bracket and await the winner of a match between the WPIAL's other two representatives, Canon-McMillan (12-3) and Kiski Area (22-2), who will square off on Saturday morning in a third round consolation match at 9:00am .PIAA Team Wrestling Playoffs – Day One Recap

WPIAL qualifiers Belle Vernon, Canon McMillan and Kiski Area all won opening round matches at the PIAA Class AAA Team Wrestling Championships on Thursday evening at the GIANT Center in Hershey. The mat dynasty run has reached double digits. The Burrell Buccaneers continued their record run of WPIAL Class AA Team Wrestling championships with victories over South Fayette in the Semifinals and Freedom in the Finals Saturday at Chartiers-Houston High School to claim a tenth consecutive crown and 12th in school history. Meanwhile in the Class AAA Semifinals and Finals at Penn Hills High School, top-seed Belle Vernon swept past North Allegheny and Canon-McMillan for the schools first ever team wrestling title. After coming up short a year ago from being WPIAL Champions, Belle Vernon had no trouble taking care of business Saturday at Penn Hills. The day started with Belle Vernon defeating North Allegheny in the semi finals 54-12. In that match, the Leopards picked up six falls and three major decisions to cruise to a victory. Belle Vernon's opponent in the finals was Canon McMillan, who avenged a 15 point December defeat to knock off Kiski Area in the other semi final, 27-25. An upset at 182, where James Zeremenko pinned Tyler Worthing, gave Canon McMillan a 12 point swing from the December match that Kiski Area was not able to overcome.Scholastic Notebook – 11/13/2015

A Steel Valley player made some history last week. Now, the Steel Valley team will try to make some more history Friday night. It went pretty much unnoticed, but Steel Valley running back DeWayne Murray surpassed 4,000 career yards rushing last week in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs. Although close to 70 runners have gained 4,000 yards rushing in their careers, it is a noteworthy feat for Murray because he is only a junior and is the first Steel Valley player to reach 4,000 yards. Murray has 4,097 yards on 363 attempts, an impressive 11.3 yards-per-carry average. Because he is only a junior, he has a good chance to next year become the 17th runner in WPIAL history to gain 5,000 career yards.WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Six 2015

In the mid-1800’ when you went to the fabric store and asked for a bolt or a yard of cloth, the clerk would first just hold it out at ‘arms- length’ to give you an idea of how much you were getting. But, when the time came for the actual cutting of the fabric and the paying of the money the fabric would be measured exactly between a pair of brass tacks set in the counter at specific lengths. That’s where the term “getting down to brass tacks” comes from. No more looks from a distance at who are the championship contenders in the WPIAL. Anthony Welsh of Bethlehem-Center will likely run his way into the WPIAL record books Friday night. Welsh, a senior, needs only 62 yards rushing to reach 4,000 for his career. He would become the 63rd player in WPIAL history to reach 4,000 yards. With that in mind, here are some factoids about the 4,000-yard milestone: * The first player known to reach 4,000 yards was Jerry Patterson of Chartiers-Houston, who graduated in 1970 with 4,075 yards. * Welsh would be the second Beth-Center runner to reach 4,000. Welcome to Week 5 of the high school football season. After missing out on last Friday night’s football action due to a scheduling conflict, Chick’s Picks came down with a nasty case of the somethings on Saturday. When this bug continued to wreak havoc for a few days, Chick’s Picks decided it was time to seek help from the good doctor. At the exam, Chick’s Picks began explaining her symptoms to the doc. He seemed as bewildered as she was, unable to pinpoint the cause of the illness. It’s the “halftime is halfway” games this weekend throughout the WPIAL. The WPIAL enters week five with 22 unbeaten teams still intact and striving for perfection. Five are perfect in AAAA, four in AAA, nine in AA and four in A. When we reach halftime at this weekend’s game we will be halfway through the regular season. The weather man says there could be some rain and temperatures this Friday night will drop into the low 50’s or maybe even high 40’s during week five. Will that weather cause footballs and perfect seasons to slip through fingertips? Who will rise and who will fall as we move into October? This could get spooky. I don’t know if there will be a moment of silence for the remembrance of 9-11-01 at your game Friday night around the WPIAL. I think there should be. I hope there will be, and I believe there will be, but I don’t know for certain. I know this, Friday for me at South Park, I will take a moment to myself to soak in the National Anthem with a little more thought than "who won the toss", or "where are their starters". I hope you do so as well, we should do that more often. I was a brand new father on 9-11, my daughter, now a freshman at Bishop Canevin, had not reached a month old when the Towers fell, and the kids on the fields in front of you Friday night were the same, or just a little older. They don’t know that fear that we felt that morning, and I pray they never do.
