CTK 2011 – WPIAL AAAA GREAT SOUTHERN Conference Preview

In the first eleven years of this century, three different Great Southern Conference teams won WPIAL football championships (Mount Lebanon in 2000, Upper St. Clair in 2006 and Bethel Park in 2008), nearly matching the total from the other three conferences combined (Woodland Hills, Pittsburgh Central Catholic, McKeesport, North Allegheny).

CTK 2011 – 2010 WPIAL Class AAAA Football Flashback
It had been two decades since one of the WPIAL Class AAAA's top football programs had won a district championship. However that drought ended when North Allegheny captured gold by beating the 2009 champion Woodland Hills Wolverines in the WPIAL finals at Heinz Field. Three weeks later, the Tigers captured a second PIAA football crown to go along with the 1990 state championship they won.

Former WPIAL and NBA Star Armon Gilliam Dies at Age 47

Former Bethel Park High School University of Nevada-Las Vegas and NBA star Armon Gilliam collapsed while playing basketball in Bridgeville Tuesday night and passed away at the age of 47.

10th MSA Sports Athletes of the Year Coming 7/1/11

MSA Sports has just concluded its 12th season of high school sports coverage in Western Pennsylvania ten years under the Management Science Associates umbrella. Another anniversary of sorts is coming Friday with the announcement of the 10th MSA Sports Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

North Allegheny and Deer Lakes Win 2011 WPIAL Boys Volleyball Titles

For one school, it was just another gold trophy to add to their recent run, for another, it's a title that has been a long time coming. North Allegheny beat section rival Seneca Valley in four games to capture a fifth consecutive WPIAL boys volleyball title by winning the Class AAA championship Friday evening at Chartiers Valley High School.

Its 2009 All Over Again as Mt. Lebanon and Hampton Earn 2011 WPIAL Boys Lacrosse Championships
Mount Lebanon and Hampton won the very first WPIAL boys lacrosse championships two years ago in 2009. After missing out last season, the gold rush continued for both the Blue Devils and Talbots in 2011. Both schools captured a second WPIAL boys lacrosse crown with tight victories Friday night at Chartiers Valley High School and here on the MSA Sports Network.

Two WPIAL baseball teams head into the Quarterfinals with undefeated records. Considering the past, it would be highly unusual if one of them wins the WPIAL title. Norwin is 17-0 and plays in the Class AAAA Quarterfinals Monday against Bethel Park. Elizabeth Forward is 18-0 and plays in the Class AAA Quarterfinals Monday against either Greensburg Salem or Central Valley.

Shady Side Academy and Sewickley Academy Pairs Golden in 2011 WPIAL Boys Doubles Tennis

In the end, it was worth the wait for the two top-seeds. More than a week after playing the first three rounds of the 2011 WPIAL Boys Doubles Tennis Playoffs, top-seeds Vivek Nimgaokar and Justin Hunt of Shady Side Academy won the Class AAA title while Will Kleeman and Daniel Martchek of Sewickley Academy won gold in Class AA Monday afternoon at Keystone Oaks High School.
