Here is a look back at another great high school sports year with the top stories from around the WPIAL in 2015. If you want to see variety, check out Paris this fall. But we’re not talking the city of Paris. We’re talking the junior do-it-all player for the Seton-LaSalle football team named Paris Ford. He is a Ford that is souped up with versatility. He is undoubtedly one of the most versatile – and best – players in the WPIAL. Ford is listed as a receiver and defensive back. He is a stud at both positions. But he also runs the football and returns kicks and punts. How versatile is he? Well, Seton-LaSalle has moved the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Ford to linebacker because that’s where they could use him the most.
CTK 2015 – Class AAA Parkway Conference Preview

It wouldn’t exactly be going out on a limb to predict that a team from the Parkway Conference will make the WPIAL Class AAA championship. After all, the past six Class AAA champs have come from the Parkway. In fact, over those six seasons, 10 of the 12 title game participants have come from the Parkway. It’s very likely that the Parkway will have another team in the championship game this year. But figuring out who that team will be isn’t easy.
2015 MSA Sports Diamond Studs

The MSA Sports Diamond Studs all-star team is well-armed. The team is made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position. More than past years, the 2015 team is extremely heavy on pitchers. Some might play other positions also, but eight of the 10 players on this year’s team made big impacts as pitchers. This year’s team has six seniors, three juniors and a sophomore. It also includes six players who have either signed or made verbal commitments to Division I colleges. Two of those six are non-seniors, including a sophomore who has already committed to a national powerhouse college program. Here is a look at the Diamond Studs and the Player of the Year. The Class of 2015 On Monday, May 18th, twenty (20) student athletes were recognized by the WPIAL for their extraordinary achievements - both academically and athletically - throughout their high school careers. This years scholarship recipients are listed below, including brief bios on each (as provided by the WPIAL).
Shaler Three-Peats as WPIAL Girls Lacrosse Division II Champs
Senior midfielder Shannon Lynch scored four goals and added an assist, leading Shaler (19-1) to a 10-5 triumph over Blackhawk (15-3) in the WPIAL Girls Division II lacrosse title game at Highmark Stadium Thursday evening. It was the third straight championship for the victorious Titans. Lynch scored an amazing 22 goals during her squad’s three game trek through the playoffs this season. In three championship final contests, Lynch notched a total of 16 goals. She also scored six goals each as a sophomore in 2013 and a junior in 2014.Scholastic Notebook – 04/25/2015

It opened some eyes in October when Bailey Parshall accepted a scholarship from the Penn State softball team. Parshall is a freshman and when she accepted the scholarship, she had yet to pitch an inning in high school. But after a month of the WPIAL softball season, it has become clear why Penn State went after Parshall. Parshall already has established herself as one of the WPIAL’s top pitchers – as a ninth-grader. In the latest WPIAL statistics published by the Post-Gazette, Parshall leads the WPIAL in strikeouts with 115 and she is tied for the WPIAL lead in wins. She has a 10-1 record. The Blackhawk Cougars have settled on the coach that will follow Joe Hamilton. Current Mohawk head coach Joe Lamenza, was tabbed to lead the Cougars on Thursday night. Lamenza was 7-29 in four years at Mohawk, he has also served as the head coach at West Mifflin and Slippery Rock and was an assistant at Ellwood City, Riverside and Beaver, along with Robert Morris University. The new coach knows something about competition, Mohawk has played in the Midwestern Conference under Lamenza, he goes now to the Parkway Conference, where Blackhawk has struggled the past few seasons. The Cougars have not won a playoff game since 2008, a winning record since 2011 and missed the playoffs in both 2013 and 2014.Scholastic Notebook – 04/10/2015

Beaver Falls High School is trying to make sure the school’s 1975 baseball team won’t be forgotten. At a baseball game in two weeks, the ’75 team that won a WPIAL title will be honored before a Beaver Falls game. No one is quite ready to call this year’s Beaver Falls team championship caliber, but the Tigers are doing a pretty good job of grabbing some attention for themselves. It’s still extremely early in the WPIAL baseball season, but Beaver Falls is 3-0. That might not sound like much, but considering the past few years, it is a gigantic step forward for Beaver Falls.

Four athletes who would later go on to professional careers, several multi-sport athletes, four coaches who won nearly 40 WPIAL championships between them, an old-school baseball player whose son continued his Major League Baseball legacy and a team that won nine WPIAL and PIAA playoff games en route to a state basketball title by an average margin of victory of 25.8. Those are some of the headliners of the WPIAL Hall of Fame class of 2015. The WPIAL held a news conference Thursday morning to announce its ninth annual class. You can watch the video stream archived here on MSA Sports. All inductees will be honored at a banquet June 12 at the Doubletree Hotel in Greentree.
