Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Game Recap for 12/12/13
December 14, 2013
At the Beaver County Ice Arena the Blackhawk Cougars improved to 6-3 with an 8-1 victory over the Trinity Hillers. It was all Cougars in the first period. Kyle Schaefer opened up the scoring at the 6:11 mark with a slap shot to make it 1-0. Robbie  Swinderman, and Grant Rombold, would each score and Austin Javens would score twice as Blackhawk would lead 5-0 after 1 period. The Cougars were 1 for 2 on the power play and had 21 shots on goal. Into the second period Hiller goalie Nathan Connelly was replaced in net by Zacchary Kagle and he would only allow one goal in period 2. Rombold would score his second of the game at 5:27 on a wrist shot to make it 6-0. The Cougars would have 25 shots on goal in period two.

Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Game Recap for 11/14/13

At the Beaver County Ice Arena in a Hometown Sports Broadcast the Morgantown Mohawks defeat the home standing Blackhawk Cougars by a 6-3 score. Both teams came into the contest undefeated, Morgantown at 3-0, and the Cougars at 2-0. Both teams were scoring goals at a record pace. The Mohawks had 23 in 3 games or 7.6 per game, and Blackhawk had 20 in just their two games and had a 10 goals per game average. This game saw 9 goals, some great goaltending, a lot of great offense and pressure but not a lot of defense.

Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Game Recap for 11/5/13

At the Beaver County Ice Arena on Tuesday November  5th in a special Hometown Broadcast the Beaver Bobcats score 3 goals within :37 seconds late in the third period to defeat the Blackhawk Cougars by an 8-6 score. Blackhawk down four  players due to injury or sickness skated only 11 players plus a goalie in this battle of neighboring school districts. The Bobcats used 14 skaters and a goalie and this would prove to be an advantage late in the game. Both teams entered the game with 0-2 records and were looking for their first win.

These are the days of spread offenses and pass-happy teams in WPIAL football. It’s not often you see a team average over 300 yards a game on the ground.But in the next two weeks, two of the top games in the WPIAL will match teams that average more than 300 yards a game rushing. It is definitely unusual. And if you think running the football is not important any more, consider that all four of the teams involved in those games enter Week 8 with perfect records.Aliquippa plays at Beaver Falls in a big WPIAL Class AA Midwestern game tonight, matching two teams that average more than 300 yards a game rushing. It will be the same next week when Thomas Jefferson plays at West Mifflin a WPIAL Class AAA Big Nine Conference game.

Hometown Volleyball Match Recap: Beaver Bobcats 3 – BLACKHAWK COUGARS 1

In Hometown Volleyball action between the Blackhawk Cougars and the Beaver Bobcats at Blackhawk high school, Beaver wins the match 3-1. Game scores were, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22, 25-14.Both teams came into this pivotal section 1 AA match tied with identical 7-1 records and tied for first place with section rival Hopewell. All three teams have clinched a playoff berth, but we're tied as Beaver had a win over Blackhawk, and Hopewell over Beaver, and Blackhawk over Hopewell. This match tonite went a long way to determine the section champion and playoff position.The Cougars play Hopewell next week, while Beaver will take on the Vikings this Thursday night.

Hometown Volleyball Match Recap: BLACKHAWK COUGARS 3 – Hopewell Vikings 2
September 24, 2013
The Blackhawk Cougars rallied from a 0-2 deficit to defeat the 2nd ranked Hopewell Vikings Tuesday night in Chippewa 21-25, 18-25, 26-24, 25-18 and 15-9. With the victory, the Cougars move into a tie for first place with Hopewell for the top spot in Section 1 AA at 5-1.The Vikings led 22-17 in the third game, when Blackhawk coach Cindy Guthrie called a timeout. She said that she told the girls to just get the score to 22-20 and see where it goes from there. Blackhawk scored three straight points to make it 23-20 and Hopewell coach Terry Borkovic called timeout.The Cougars were able to tie the game at 23 and then won it with senior Haley Schramm making the big play to give Blackhawk the win.

MSA Sports Hometown Girls Volleyball Salute – BLACKHAWK COUGARS

Under the direction of new head coach Cindy Guthrie, Blackhawk expects good things from this veteran quad of five returning starters. Haley Schramm, left front hitter, is returning as a 3-year letter winner, WPIAL first team member and WPIAL all-district.  She led the team in kills and blocks last season.  MaKenna Malinowski is a 2-year letter winner, defensive specialist that led the teams in digs and aces last season.  She was also chosen as first team all-section. We look for significant contributions from Senior Hannah Pringle, a left-handed right side hitter as well as middle hitters senior Allie Menges and junior Nikki Beatty.

CTK 2013 – WPIAL Triple-A Parkway Conference Preview
August 15, 2013
While repeats have been the story in the WPIAL in the last few years with Clairton winning five consecutive Class A titles, two straight Class AA titles for Aliquippa and three straight titles for North Allegheny in Quad A, there have been no repeat champion in Class AAA.However, a team from the Parkway Conference has claimed the last four AAA trophies, with West Allegheny as the defending champion. In fact, five of the nine coaches in the conference has won a WPIAL championship, those coaches have combined for 13 gold medals for their teams since 1991.

Top WPIAL Baseball Player Makes College Choice

One of the most dominant pitchers to come out of the WPIAL in recent years has made his college choice. Soon to be senior Brendan McKay, a left handed pitcher from Blackhawk High School who has been frustrating opponents since his freshman year three years ago, has decided to play his college baseball at the University of Louisville.McKay, who hopes to be drafted high in the 2014 Major League Baseball first-year player draft next June, selected Louisville over scholarship offers from West Virginia, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Virginia, Virginia Teach and Kent State among others. He has twice been named to the MSA Sports Diamond Studs baseball all-star team.
