The WPIAL went a perfect three for three during Championship Weekend in Hershey. The Blackhawks Cougars won the Triple-A crown, the Seton-LaSalle Rebels captured Double-A gold and the Vincentian Academy Royals are celebrating their first Single-A state championship. Blackhawk Girls Win Third PIAA AAA Championship
The Blackhawk Cougars used a dominant third quarter to claim their first PIAA girls Class AAA title since 2000 and third in school history by defeating Archbishop Wood 51-43 at the Giant Center on Saturday night. Chassidy Omogrosso scored 26 points and allowed the Cougars to stay in the game in the first half. Blackhawk trailed 16-13 after one, Omogrosso hit a jumper at the buzzer to keep it a three point game. Halle Denman took over the scoring in the second, with a layup, two free throws and a key steal late in the half, the Cougars trailed 27-23 at the break.WPIAL Girls Basketball Championship Preview

For one of the few times in district basketball finals history, the WPIAL will have book-end girls basketball championship games with the Class A title games lifting the curtain and the Class AAAA finals concluding two days of championships. At the Morgantown Ice Center, Kienan Battin knocked home a loose puck past Cory Steinle in overtime to push the Mohawks past the Cougars and into the PIHL Open Class Southwest Division championship game on Thursday night. Battin recorded his second hat trick of the playoffs, he leads the Mohawks with 6 goals during the post season and 34 overall for the season.

The Blackhawk Cougars were a much better road team during the regular season than at home, Sunday night was no different in the opening game of the PIHL Open Cup playoffs as the 5th seeded Cougars knocked off the 4th seeded Trojans at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. At the Beaver County Ice Arena in PIHL Open class competition, the Blackhawk Cougars with a chance to play for a home playoff game lost in a tough battle with McDowell 5-3. The Blackhawk Cougars sitting in 4th place and an outside shot at the third seed in the Open Class PIHL playoffs simply laid an egg in a 7-0 nothing loss to the Harbor Creek Huskies. The Huskies have the first seed wrapped up for the playoffs which start Sunday February 23rd. It was all Huskies all night as they came on strong right from the first face off. They had played the night before so it came as somewhat of a surprise. At the Beaver County Ice Arena in Open Class Hockey competition the Wheeling Park Patriots win a wild game over the home standing Blackhawk Cougars by a 6-5 score. In a game with playoff implications for both teams. The game was tied four times, as the Cougars kept coming back. But the Patriots scored last for the win. In the first period Blackhawk scored on a goal by Bobby Piccerilo at 4:28 to open the scoring to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Cameron Houk and Grant Rombold had assists. That lead lasted until :17 seconds left in the period as Wheeling Parks Austin Curnes tied it at 1-1. It was Senior night at the Beaver County Ice Arena for the Blackhawk Cougars Hockey team. Seven players were honored before the game. However the Harborcreek Huskies spoiled the festivities with a 6-3 come from behind victory to improve to 12-1 on the season. KYLE DOUGLAS SCHAEFER #66 Captain Kyle is the son of Doug and Donna Schaefer and a brother to Owen, Abby & Eli Kyle began skating at 2yrs. of age and began hockey start at 4yrs. old. Kyle has been playing for the Beaver County Badgers for 14yrs. and Blackhawk Hockey for 7yrs.
