In a pivotal early season matchup between two teams struggling to find consistency, the Vincentian Academy Royals staged a huge rally in defeating the Brentwood Spartans on their home court by a score of 3-2.  While Vincentian Academy started strong in the first two games of the match by grabbing early leads, the Spartans would eventually battle back and win both by scores of 25-23 and 25-22.  Brentwood was paced early on by the attacking of their outside hitters, Kaitlyn McNamara, Hannah Livingston and Alexis Wagner and by getting some excellent blocks for key points by middle Allison Mrkonja.  Mrkonja would finish with a total of five blocks in the match.

CTK ’14: WPIAL A Black Hills Conference Preview
August 22, 2014
Look at the makeup of the Black Hills Conference and the name doesn’t seem to fit any more. With the WPIAL’s realignment for this year, the Black Hills changed drastically. Scholastic Notebook – 01/05/2014
January 5, 2014
Ever since George Yokitis became Vincentian’s boys basketball coach in the 2008-09 season, he has tried to have his teams play an up-tempo, full-court style. The Royals press, trap all over the court and try to keep the tempo at a fast pace on offense. But the style has never created scoring like this year. Vincentian Academy is undefeated and scoring at a pace that is rarely seen around the WPIAL. The Royals are averaging 92.1 points a game and have scored 90 points or more seven times. You can say that it’s easier to play this way in Class A. And yes, Vincentian plays on a small court, which makes it easier to score more and trap more defensively. But still, the Royals haven’t scored like this in the past.

In fact, they would do it all again even knowing the heartbreak was coming right at them. That’s why the playoffs in the WPIAL are perfect just the way they are. Now let’s stop bickering about it and go Big Game Hunting!
