Spring is the time for things to bloom, right? This spring has been a time for a group of young WPIAL athletes to sprout. One of the storylines for spring sports in the WPIAL has been the young blood that has flowed through the league and made an impact. In case you didn’t notice, it has been a spring where an unusually a number of sophomores or freshmen did some terrific things in a few different sports. Beaver Falls High School is trying to make sure the school’s 1975 baseball team won’t be forgotten. At a baseball game in two weeks, the ’75 team that won a WPIAL title will be honored before a Beaver Falls game. No one is quite ready to call this year’s Beaver Falls team championship caliber, but the Tigers are doing a pretty good job of grabbing some attention for themselves. It’s still extremely early in the WPIAL baseball season, but Beaver Falls is 3-0. That might not sound like much, but considering the past few years, it is a gigantic step forward for Beaver Falls.
2014-2015 MSA SPORTS GIRLS ALL-NETTERS

Most of the girls on the All-Netters team are going places. The All-Netters team is the top 10 players in the WPIAL and is picked by the MSA Sports staff. This year’s team has seven players going to Division I colleges, including one who is going for softball. The team includes three players who scored more than 2,000 points, and all four WPIAL champions are represented. Six WPIAL Class AA Wrestlers Win PIAA Titles

It was a golden day for the WPIAL in the AA PIAA Championships, as nearly half of the state champions were from District 7. The Wrestling Dynasty Continues as Burrell Wins WPIAL AA Again

The Burrell wrestling team has built a dynasty over the past decade, and that success continued on Saturday, as the Buccaneers defeated McGuffey 38-25 to capture their ninth straight WPIAL Class AA Championship at Canon-McMillan High School.2015 WPIAL TEAM WRESTLING PLAYOFFS RESULTS
The calendar may have changed, but the results did not. The 2015 District 7 team wrestling champs are the same as the 2014 title winners. In fact in Class AA, they are the same as 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 and in 2007 and the Burrell Buccaneers kept their golden mat dynasty in tact with a ninth straight Class AA crown. Meanwhile, it's two in a row in Class AAA for the Franklin Regional Panthers after they edged North Allegheny in the Semifinals and Belle Vernon in the Finals. Meanwhile both North Allegheny in AAA and South Fayette in AA have earned spots in next weeks PIAA Team Wrestling Playoffs with Consolation match victories. Laurel High School picked a Locke a few years ago. Now, the Spartans have found the keys to winning basketball. The Laurel boys team is one of the big turnaround stories in the WPIAL this season. The Spartans are 13-3 and in second place in Section 1 of Class AA. They are the MSA Sports No. 5-ranked Class AA team. The main directing the turnaround is Ken Locke. Laurel hired him before the 2012 season and Locke, a 1995 Laurel graduate, has done a great job in turning around the Spartans.Scholastic Notebook – 01/09/2015

New Castle High School’s Malik Hooker apparently isn’t the only one who wears the athletic “genes” in the family. Hooker was one of the best two-sport athletes in the state the past two years, standing out in football and basketball. He now is a freshman football player at Ohio State, but is being redshirted this year. Two of Hooker’s younger brothers are now playing on the New Castle basketball. One of them is the team’s leading scorer in his first year as a starter. Marquel Hooker, a 5-foot-10 junior, is averaging 16.4 points a game. He never saw regular varsity time before this season.
