Here at MSA Sports, we like to spread the wealth when it comes to shining our spotlight. It seems some players shine for top teams each and every week. Sure, we will acknowledge their greatness, but we also like to tip our cap to those players and teams that are not steady contributors in each week to the 'W' column around the WPIAL. When they do, we want to salute high and proud. So without further adieu, we shine on the brightest performance from Week Two. The WPIAL realigns football conferences every two years, but the league kept the Class AAAA Northern Eight Conference intact from the past two seasons. But really, the Northern Eight is the northern seven plus the big one from the city. The conference has seven teams from the northern suburbs, plus the team from the Oakland area of the city that wears the helmets with horns. Pittsburgh Central Catholic will once again be a major player in WPIAL Class AAAA after winning the title a year ago. The Vikings also won the conference title a year ago, but they might have a tougher challenge to finish first this season.Scholastic Notebook – 04/11/2014

Have strong pitching and possess the ability to win close games. It sounds like the Pirates recipe for success this year and last. But it’s also the two main ingredients involved in the biggest turnaround stories so far in WPIAL baseball. The Butler Golden Tornado is one of the big surprises of the early season. Butler is 6-2 overall and in first place in Section 1 of Class AAAA. Section 1 also is home to perennial baseball powers North Allegheny and Seneca Valley. This is the same Butler team that went 2-16 last season and did not win a section game.Scholastic Notebook – 02/21/2014

If the WPIAL basketball quarterfinals are a party for eight, Class AAAA Section 1 has done and unusual thing and made reservations for two. It’s like Section 1 has finally stood up and said “what about us?” Hempfield and Kiski Area are Section 1 teams that have made it to the quarterfinals. It might not seem like much, but seeing two from Section 1 eating at the quarterfinal table doesn’t happen often. Since 2000, this is only the fourth time that two teams from Section 1 have made the quarterfinals and the first time since 2010. In 2007, Albert Gallatin and Norwin made the quarterfinals. Norwin and Franklin Regional made it in 2008. Kiski Area and Latrobe made it in 2010.PIHL Notebook: 2013-2014 Class AAA Preview

The Northern Eight Conference has gone young – at least in terms of coaching experience. Heading into this season, maybe the most interesting storyline is who is leading the teams. Jack McCurry, the third-winningest coach in WPIAL history, retired in the offseason after 35 seasons as North Hills’ coach. Pat Carey, longtime defensive coordinator for North Hills and a former Indian player, takes over. At Pine-Richland, longtime coach Clair Altemus stepped down. Offensive coordinator Eric Kasperowicz takes over. He also is a former North Hills player. Elsewhere in the conference, there are young coaches. Eric Ravotti is in his third season at Fox Chapel.
