In a year when the Pirates ended a long playoff drought, a long WPIAL football playoff drought could end for one school.Avella in the WPIAL playoffs. It’s likely to happen.Avella takes a 4-0 record (5-0 overall) into Friday night’s game against Frazier. No matter what happens Friday night and in the final three games, Avella stands an excellent chance to make the playoffs. The last time the Eagles were in the playoffs was 1976.Avella’s playoff drought is the current longest in the WPIAL. It was a clean sweep for the month of September weather wise as for the fourth straight Friday and the fifth overall, the weather was outstanding for high school football around Western Pennsylvania. Any discussion of the race in the Class A Black Hills must start with Clairton. The Bears come into the season on a 63-game winning streak, the longest current streak in the country and the longest in the history of Pennsylvania. Clairton lost a number of key players to graduation. So do the Bears simply reload? Do they step a back? Is this finally the year the streak ends? Questions abound about the Bears. For sure, they are good enough to win a conference title again and maybe a sixth consecutive WPIAL and fifth consecutive PIAA. Monday saw WPIAL AA champion Beaver clinch a spot in the PIAA state finals. However the news was not as good on Tuesday for District 7 as North Allegheny in Quad-A, Keystone Oaks in Triple-A and California in Single-A all saw their state title dreams and their 2013 season comes to an end with heartbreaking losses. History was made Wednesday evening at Ross Memorial Field as the WPIAL held its very first Class AAAA baseball consolation game. With the demise of the Pittsburgh City League in baseball, the PIAA added a third team from District 7 Class AAAA. Here are recaps from both the Quad-A and the Single-A consolation games played on Wednesday at the Washington & Jefferson College Sports Complex.
