Not only did Seneca Valley’s 34-7 victory against Pittsburgh Central Catholic Thursday night give Seneca Valley a leg up on second place in the Northern Eight Conference, it was a monumental win of sorts for the Raiders. * For the first time in a while, the Raiders won a big game against an upper-echelon Class AAAA team. A year ago, Seneca Valley won a WPIAL playoff game for the first time since 2002. This time, the Raiders defeated a Central Catholic team that was ranked No. 4 in Class AAAA by MSA Sports. * The win broke Central Catholic’s 26-game regular-season winning streak. The Vikings’ last regular-season loss was to Woodland Hills, 27-3, on oct. 2, 2009.

CTK 2012 – WPIAL AAAA Southestern Conference Preview

When the new Class AAAA football alignment was announced back in January, more than a few heads were being scratched when folks starting looking at "Section 2". The conference was made up of the six teams from the old Great Southern Conference along with three teams from the Big East. Six schools from southern Allegheny County and northern Washington County joined by three teams right in the heart of eastern Allegheny County.Anybody who has tried going from East to South or vice-versa, yet alone during rush-hour on a Friday, knows there is no easy commute. However while the travel aspect of this new conference will be a pain, the football aspect should be a thrill.

PIAA Softball Semifinals Recaps for Monday

It was a rough day for WPIAL softball champions on Monday, fortunately for Neshannock fans, the Lancers did not win a district title this spring. Canon-McMillan, Montour and Chartiers-Houston all lost, however Neshannock will carry the WPIAL banner to Penn State as the Lancers play for a Class AA state softball title on Friday. Blackhawk coach Bob Amalia must decide whether or not to bring back standout pitcher Brendan McKay on only three days rest for the PIAA semifinals Monday. But Blackhawk’s opponent also has an ace who pitched a complete-game Thursday. Blackhawk (22-2) will meet West York (21-4) in a Class AAA Semifinal 3 p.m. Monday at Hollidaysburg. West York features Kaden Hepler, who will be pitching Division I college baseball next year at Winthrop. Hepler has been superb this season with a 12-0 record. He has a 0.54 ERA and has struck out 116 in 78 1/3 innings. He has allowed only 46 hits.
