Emotional Jefferson-Morgan Edges Char-Houston for WPIAL Class A Softball Gold

Maddie Ludrosky struck out a dozen batters and Morgan Simkovic doubled home the go-ahead run as Jefferson-Morgan topped Chartiers-Houston, 3-2, Thursday, winning the school's first WPIAL softball championship. The Rockets have won 11 straight games since losing to the Bucs April 1st. It's a shame one of these two teams had to lose. Both pitchers for Chartiers-Houston and Jefferson-Morgan pitched a gem, but it was the Rockets who walked away with the W in a tight Section 1 A softball game. Senior Megan Kraushaar lead off for the Bucaneers, making contact with one of Maddie Ludrosky's pitches, flying out to right field. The Chartiers-Houston softball team seems to have its matters in order as it works its way to the postseason. Momentum - check. The Buccaneers won their 12th straight game with a 10-0 win over Mapletown in a Section 1-A contest Tuesday at Allison Park Elementary School during a game played amidst extremely high winds. The win improved Chartiers-Houston to 12-1, 7-0 in the section. Offense - check. The Buccaneers (who average 10 runs a game) scored in double figures for the fifth straight game, rapping out 13 hits in the victory. This is the time of year in basketball where coaches often look to their seniors or experienced players for leadership and to make key plays in playoff games. But for a few teams in the WPIAL, “fresh” faces can be seen on the court. The New Castle and Mars boys, and also the Chartiers-Houston girls have made it to the PIAA quarterfinals and freshmen have fueled their runs. * For New Castle, 6-foot freshman forward Marcus Hooker is averaging 10 points and seven rebounds a game for a team that will play Archbishop Carroll tonight in the Class AAA elite eight. Hooker is the younger brother of Malik Hooker, a former New Castle star who is now a freshman football player at Ohio State. Marcus also plays football.Scholastic Notebook – 01/09/2015

New Castle High School’s Malik Hooker apparently isn’t the only one who wears the athletic “genes” in the family. Hooker was one of the best two-sport athletes in the state the past two years, standing out in football and basketball. He now is a freshman football player at Ohio State, but is being redshirted this year. Two of Hooker’s younger brothers are now playing on the New Castle basketball. One of them is the team’s leading scorer in his first year as a starter. Marquel Hooker, a 5-foot-10 junior, is averaging 16.4 points a game. The Southmoreland football team failed to make the WPIAL football postseason again. The Scotties haven’t been to the playoffs since 1979, the longest current drought in the WPIAL. But there are some other playoff droughts that are notable as the WPIAL playoffs get under way Friday with 32 games around the area. Three teams in the postseason have never won a WPIAL playoff game. Never, ever, ever. They are Laurel Highlands, Mapletown and Altoona. Altoona is a little deceiving. The school re-joined the WPIAL for football only a few years ago. But the school played in the WPIAL a long time ago. Altoona has played in only two previous WPIAL playoff games. The last was in 2012. The Chartiers-Houston girls’ volleyball team notched a critical victory for its playoff bid on Tuesday, as the host Lady Buccaneers captured a straight-sets win over Burgettstown. All three sets were tightly contested, as Chartiers-Houston triumphed 25-20, 25-22, 25-23 to improve its record to 6-2 in Class A Section 6 play. Meanwhile, the Lady Blue Devils fall to 3-5 in section play, and are currently outside the playoff picture. In the opening set, the Buccaneers controlled the play early, but the Blue Devils rebounded to take a 16-13 advantage. Senior libero Kassie Kesneck keyed the comeback for Chartiers-Houston, though, as her potent served helped spark an 8-0 run for the Bucs.WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz for 9/27

On a picturesque evening at Dormont Stadium, the only WPIAL game on the fifth Saturday of the 2014 season took place. The stakes were high with five teams, Fort Cherry, Brentwood, Northgate and the two teams slated for Saturday night, Chartiers-Houston and Bishop Canevin all muddled together with one game separating the five in the battle for the final two playoff spots in the Black Hills Conference. Welcome to week five of Big Game Hunting. Before we get started a word from our sponsor (yours truly). I am already on the record with regard to this issue but it seems I am the lone voice crying out in the wilderness. I hate the seven o’clock starts! There seems to be an overwhelming movement towards them and it is very frustrating. Why is the hurry that already consumes our everyday lives being allowed to worm its way into my favorite thing? I find it despicable, truly. There I have gotten that off my chest and since I know holding my breath and stomping my feet will not help I will just go Big Game Hunting. Super-irritated by the fact that three of the four-pack are of the shameful seven o’clock start variety.
