We are proud to say that all of our starting varsity players are either high honor or advanced placement students, many of whom are taking college credit courses during their senior year this year with Pitt University. We have five returning seniors including Tori Foster, OH/MB with 4 years of high school volleyball experience, WPIAL section 6A 3rd team in 2011, and an accomplished basketball player since 2nd grade. Tori also runs track at CH, is a varisty cheerleader and a member of numerous clubs. She intends on pursuing computer system mgt in college.Big Game Hunting for Week One 2012

The hot, hot summer of 2012 is winding down and that is great for fans of high school football. If you’ve been keeping up to date with the MSA Sports Countdown to Kick-off articles, you should be in mid-season form and ready to roll for week one of the 2012 WPIAL football campaign, if you haven’t, shame on you. But hey we forgive you and everybody gets a clean slate heading into week one, it’s all about hope and a fresh start….and re-alignment, so re-align your priorities next season and make sure you follow the countdown series. The Black Hills Conference already was pretty good. But after the WPIAL’s realignment of conferences for this season, the Hills are alive even more. A few changes to the Black Hills made it a 10-team conference – and also made it stronger. One of the conference’s new members is Bishop Canevin, a team that is always more than competitive. Coach Bob Jacoby’s team was 11-1 last year and made the WPIAL semifinals. Monessen, which always has some talented players, moved into the Black Hills from the Tri-County South. California and Imani Christian also are new additions to the league. California comes from the Tri-County South while this is Imani’s first year in the WPIAL.

Since the pitching rubber for girls softball was moved back a few feet last season, pitchers don’t dominate to the same extent in this sport. But pitchers still dominate this year’s MSA Sports Diamond Dolls all-star team. The team is made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position. It is picked by the MSA Sports staff. This year’s all-star team is made up of eight pitchers. Two of the eight pitchers won WPIAL championships. Here is a look at this 2012 Diamond Dolls. It was a rough day for WPIAL softball champions on Monday, fortunately for Neshannock fans, the Lancers did not win a district title this spring. Canon-McMillan, Montour and Chartiers-Houston all lost, however Neshannock will carry the WPIAL banner to Penn State as the Lancers play for a Class AA state softball title on Friday. Blackhawk coach Bob Amalia must decide whether or not to bring back standout pitcher Brendan McKay on only three days rest for the PIAA semifinals Monday. But Blackhawk’s opponent also has an ace who pitched a complete-game Thursday. Blackhawk (22-2) will meet West York (21-4) in a Class AAA Semifinal 3 p.m. Monday at Hollidaysburg. West York features Kaden Hepler, who will be pitching Division I college baseball next year at Winthrop. Hepler has been superb this season with a 12-0 record. He has a 0.54 ERA and has struck out 116 in 78 1/3 innings. He has allowed only 46 hits.Scholastic Notebook – 06/01/2012

After Blackhawk’s Brendan McKay pitched a shutout in the WPIAL Class AAA championship Thursday, Blackhawk coach Bob Amalia said there is no stage too big for McKay. But as sophomores go, McKay has the entire stage to himself. The way McKay has pitched this season brings about a question. Has there ever been a sophomore pitcher in the WPIAL who has enjoyed this much success in one of the largest classifications? McKay, a sophomore left-hander, has been tremendous for a pitcher in any year, let alone one in his sophomore season. There was plenty of excitement in this softball postseason all the way down to the wire with half of the championships games being decided on a walk off hit in extra innings. One team successfully repeated as champion while another won their second title in three years. The other two that sit atop the district softball hill are celebrating first time ever WPIAL golden crowns. In another classic in the Class A softball championship game at California University's Lilley Field, the Chartiers-Houston rallied in the bottom of the ninth to claim back to back titles with a walk-off win.
