Welcome to week four of the WPIAL football season. Upon the conclusion of this week's games we will have played exactly as many weeks of regular-season football as will remain. Yes, half way already. Football is like a really good chili-cheeseburger, before you realize it, and have time to really savor it, you’re almost done with it. I double checked that information with in-house MSA Sports Network Chili Cheeseburger Expert Robert “Bobby O” Orkwis before I just threw it out there and he did confirm. Week four and we start to see some separation, finding out who are the contenders and who are the pretenders continues as we go Big Game Hunting!
CTK ’16: 5-A Allegheny Nine Conference Preview

One of the best aspects of the football realignment is the potential to build new and exciting rivalries. The Allegheny Nine Conference certainly provides some captivating possibilities, as former Quad-A Powerhouses Woodland Hills and Upper St. Clair are now joined by an elite team from AAA, West Allegheny. Six of the nine teams qualified for the postseason in 2015, with North Hills, Hampton and Chartiers Valley joining the aforementioned three. Meanwhile, two teams that finished at the bottom of their respective Quad-A conferences, Baldwin and Fox Chapel, join former AAA squad Moon to round out the newly-formed 5A section.

A first-round pick in the Major League Baseball draft, one of the winningest pitchers in WPIAL history, another pitcher who rarely gave up a run and a hitter who had one of the highest batting averages in WPIAL history. Those are a few of the players who highlight the MSA Sports Diamond Studs all-star team. The Diamond Studs are the top 10 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position. For Morgan Ryan, earning a spot in the WPIAL record book means nothing. As in zero. As in zilch. As in nothing on the scoreboard under the “R” column. Ryan is a junior pitcher for the Hempfield softball team who threw a shutout in a 2-0 victory against Baldwin in the WPIAL Class AAAA championship Friday. A year ago, she threw a one-hitter as Hempfield defeated North Allegheny, 3-0. A check of the scores of WPIAL championship games shows that Ryan is the first pitcher in the history of the WPIAL to throw back-to-back shutouts in championship games. The WPIAL has been staging softball championships for 43 years. So in four-plus decades, there has never been a pitcher like Ryan. By the way, Ryan is a Notre Dame recruit.
Chartiers Valley Gallops Past Blackhawk for First Baseball Title

The Chartiers Valley Colts (16-7) won their first baseball championship in school history with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Blackhawk Cougars (18-5) In the WPIAL AAA Championship at Consol Energy Park in Washington, PA. Cole Horew was the star on the mound for the Colts, pitching all seven innings with seven strikeouts and seven scattered hits, walking none. Chartiers Valley would threaten in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Dante Panucci doubled deep to left field. Horew then reached on an error, putting runners at second and third base. A walk to Joe Sibeto loaded the bases. But Blackhawk's Mark Engel induced Tristen Zimmer into an inning ending double play.
2016 WPIAL Baseball Championship Previews

For 75 percent of the teams in the WPIAL baseball championships, foes are familiar. Three of the four championships match teams that have already played once this season. Greensburg Central Catholic vs. Serra, and Neshannock vs. Riverside are title games between teams from the same section. Plum played Norwin in a non-section game. The Class AAA championship – Blackhawk vs. Chartiers Valley – is the only game where teams have not played before. All of the championship games will be played Tuesday and Wednesday at Consol Energy Park, home of the Washington Wild Things and heard here on the MSA Sports Network. Mount Lebanon Wins More WPIAL Girls Lacrosse D-I Gold

Senior attack Anna Albers scored 4 goals and added 4 assists and fellow senior Sophia Klaber added 4 goals of her own to lead the Mt. Lebanon to a 14-9 win over Chartiers Valley at Highmark Stadium, giving the Blue Devils their second championship in the past three years. The WPIAL Girls Division 1 title is the fifth title overall for Mt. Lebanon. Klaber and sophomore Cora Broadhurst scored the first two goals of the game and the Blue Devils never trailed against their Section 1 rival Chartiers Valley. Senior midfielder Maria Stamerra got the Colts on the board at the 7:09 mark of the first period with the first of her 6 goals in the game. But Albers on a step out move and sophomore Lexi Gibbons answered for Mt. Lebanon to make the score 4-1.WPIAL Hall of Fame Class of 2016

A current NBA player, a former Parade All-American girls basketball player, two dominant teams and four highly successful coaches highlight the WPIAL Hall of Fame class of 2016. This is the 10th class for the WPIAL Hall of Fame, and selections were announced Wednesday at a news conference at the Heinz History Center. Inductees will be honored at a banquet at the Green Tree Doubletree June 10. A Hall of Fame committee selects inductees in five categories: athlete, coach, team, contest official and contributor.
