Clairton Wins 3rd Straight, 8th WPIAL 1-A Title in 9 Years
November 26, 2016
For the ninth time in the last eleven years and the 13th time overall, the Clairton Bears have captured WPIAL gold by defeating the Jeannette Jayhawks 26-6 at Joe Walton Stadium at Robert Morris University.  Without their starting quarterback, Noah Hamlin, for the second straight game, the Bears relied heavily on running back Lamont Wade to lead the way for the victory. Wade rushed for 100 yards on 21 carries and scored two touchdowns and salted away the victory with an 82-yard interception return for a third touchdown. The interception return was the dagger in what was Jeannette’s fifth loss to Clairton in the last two years.

Chicks Picks for Week Thirteen
November 23, 2016
Welcome to Week 13 of the high school football season. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, Chick’s Picks took some time to reflect on all that she is thankful for this holiday season. Chick’s Picks is thankful for her trusty crystal ball.  Without it, she would surely not be half the talented prognosticator that she is today. Chick’s Picks is thankful for The Fumbler and H.S. Picks.  These rival prognosticators keep Chick’s Picks’ competitive spirit alive every season. Chick’s Picks is thankful for the WPIAL and its coaches and players.  After all, these are the folks that keep her and her crystal ball in business.

There were eight WPIAL football games this past weekend. Half on Friday produced four district champions and the other half on Saturday produced four teams that are now one win away from bringing gridiron gold to their schools trophy case. here are the eight players who made it happen from both the sunny and warm North Shore of Pittsburgh on Friday, or the frozen tundra of four high school sites in Western Pa on Saturday. J.J. Younger - Pittsburgh Central Catholic

MSA Sports Friday Night HighLights for Week Eleven
November 12, 2016
On Friday, we appropriately tipped our caps to all the veterans past and present who have served this great country of ours. So now, we look back to Friday and tip our cap one final time for the standouts of the various postseason gridiron contests from around the district. There were 16 WPIAL playoff games in all, eight of which determined the lineup for the four finals at Heinz Field and eight that decided the Final Four teams in the two smallest classifications. Whatever the case, here are the ten players who shined bright in leading their teams to the big house on the North Shore or into Semifinals Saturday. Jack Cook - Seneca Valley

When Ron Sciarro became Riverside’s coach this year, he changed the playing style of the Panthers. They went from a pass-happy team to one that throws only 13 times a game. But there has been one other drastic change for Riverside. It deals with the number in the wins column. After going 3-6 last year, Riverside is 7-2 this season and headed to the WPIAL Class AA playoffs. They don’t throw nearly as often, but the Panthers win much more often.

Big Game Hunting for Week Nine 2016
October 27, 2016
The final week of the regular season arrives and things are still a bit murky around the WPIAL, but as always the “Boss” has made it clear and precise, if you have questions about your team and their post season needs or desires, it is laid out here, http://www.msasports.net/articles/2016-wpial-football-playoff-picture. That amount of work can only be a labor of love, and when the boss is doing a labor of love, the worker-bees will almost always do the same. Like the famous line in Remember the Titans, “Attitude reflects leadership”. So, this opening paragraph is dedicated to my colleagues, each of them I know, doing this job because they love it.

MSA Sports Saturdays Scholastic Starz for Week Eight
October 23, 2016
Rain that made Friday night in Week eight interesting carried over into Saturday afternoon, making for a slow track at four of the five 'natural surface' sites around the WPIAL as grassy fields soon turned muddy and clean uniforms were not so much. But the late Autumn weather conditions made the afternoons and evening for these five standouts really stand out as we put a bow on the next to the last weekend of regular season high school football. Dominic Fundy - Beth-Center

Wonderful weather made for an excellent start to the MSA 'Stretch Run' to this high school football regular season. an old children's song contained the lyrics, "bend and stretch, reach for the stars." Well these players took those words to heart and were shining bright on the gridiron in leading their teams to key victories with the scent of postseason noticeably in the air. At least in two respects, there has never been a fall sports season like this at Derry Area High School. The Derry football team is perfect and the girls soccer team is headed to the postseason. No one has ever been able to say those two things before. Derry’s football team is 7-0. The last time Derry was 7-0 was 1983. That year, the Trojans lost their eighth game to Greensburg Central Catholic. Derry will try to go 8-0 with a win against Ellwood City Friday. Derry has never had a regular season with a perfect record. Derry Township had a perfect record in the 1930s, but that was before the school merged with Derry Borough to form Derry Area.
