PIAA Baseball & Softball Semifinals Tuesday Recaps
June 9, 2015
Already delayed 24 hours by rain, the forecast was not all that promising for Tuesday. However Mother nature cooperated and all but three PIAA Semifinals games were played, including three contests involving WPIAL teams. Two district softball teams were winners and are headed to Penn State to play for state gold while a district baseball team saw their season end in heartbreak fashion. Here are the three recaps from Tuesday. A special thanks to Don Rebel, Bob Orkwis, Bob Gregg and Lou Rood for their help on these recaps. BASEBALL:

Four WPIAL baseball teams have made it to the PIAA semifinals. The main ingredient to their postseason success is simple. Pitching. Of course, pitching always is key in baseball, but you might be scratching your head to come up with a group of WPIAL teams that made it this far and that have such a strong common thread of stellar pitching between them. The four are Shaler (Class AAAA), Knoch (AAA), Neshannock (AA) and Quaker Valley (AA). Of the four, only Neshannock has really made a huge impact offensively, scoring 45 runs in six postseason games. But the pitching of all four teams has been impeccable.

Deer Lakes Hands Mohawk First Loss With 13-5 Win in AA Finals
Maria Taliani belted three home runs, and Deer Lakes used a six-run explosion in the fourth inning to capture the Class AA softball title, defeating Mohawk 13-5 at Lilley Field at California University of Pennsylvania. The victory marks the second championship for the Lancers, who captured the crown in 2012, and finished in second place in each of the past two seasons. Top-seeded Deer Lakes (21-1) collected 13 hits, and Taliani and Katie Gozzard combined for 11 RBIs in the Lancers’ offensive onslaught. Both players homered in the crucial fourth inning, as the Lancers turned a 4-3 deficit into a five-run lead.

PIHL Notebook – 2014-2015 Class A Preview
October 20, 2014
Welcome to another edition of “PIHL Notebook” as we continue our comprehensive preview of the 2014-15 high school hockey season. Today we take a look at the teams vying for the Class A championship. Class A has the most complex breakdown of the new alignment, split into two tiers with two conferences in each. Tier 1 is, fittingly, the more stacked of the two. Three of last year’s final four will compete in the Western Conference, including defending champion Quaker Valley, while McDowell and Montour join from the Open Division and Class AA respectively. The Eastern Conference includes Chiefs Cup finalist Hempfield, the “other” member of last year’s Class A final four in Freeport, and another Open transplant in Gateway.

WPIAL Friday Night HighLights for 9/19
September 20, 2014
Neither players or coaches can complain about the weather in the first four weeks of this season as Mother Nature has cooperated very nicely. And the turned toward huge offensive numbers continued around fields in Southwestern Pennsylvania on the fourth Friday of the WPIAL football season. Thus it makes our job that much tougher with so many young men who deserve post-game kudos, only a few can receive our top ten tip of the cap. Ben DiNucci - Pine-Richland

At the rate he is passing, Pine-Richland quarterback Ben DiNucci has a good chance to become the 17th player in WPIAL history to throw for 5,000 career yards. While that is an impressive feat, Pine-Richland does thro the ball often. So DiNucci will naturally pile up yardage. What might be more impressive about DiNucci is his accuracy. DiNucci is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior who you probably wouldn’t want to play in darts. Sure, in Pine-Richland’s spread offense, DiNucci throws a number of short passes. But he still throws downfield and his accuracy is uncanny.

CTK ’14: WPIAL AA Allegheny Conference Preview
August 21, 2014
When has the Allegheny Conference been able to say this: There are two Pitt recruits in the conference and one West Virginia recruit. As strange as it sounds, it is true. The Allegheny has two Pitt recruits in Kittanning receiver-tight end-linebacker Nick Bowers and Apollo-Ridge receiver-defensive back Tre Tipton, who are both seniors. The West Virginia recruit is Freeport linebacker Logan Thimons, who is a junior. All three made verbal commitments to their schools. They are certainly three of the players to watch in a conference that takes on a different look this season. Two teams from last year are out while three have moved in from different classifications.

May 29, 2014
It was a dominant performance for Casey Farkasovsky when she needed it most.
