Any coach will tell you, versatility in a football player is huge. If you can play various positions at a high level in all three aspects of the game, that is a very good thing. Especially in Class 1-A where rosters sizes are small and the demand for versatility is not only appreciated, but needed. Welcome to Week 2 of the high school football season. Chick’s Picks has been fortunate enough to make a lot of friends throughout her prognosticating career – some that are unforgettable, and others that she cares to forget. One of Chick’s Picks’ favorites happens to be a very dear Twitter pal, who happens to be the better half of a local coach. This Twitter pal in particular has stood by Chick’s Picks through good times and bad – weeks when the crystal ball was on fire, as well as weeks when early retirement was considered. Earlier this season, during Week Zero, Chick’s Picks’ pal even came through with her own prediction when the crystal ball was in the shop for maintenance.Big Game Hunting for Week Two 2016

Friday and Saturday the MSA Sports Network has you covered with wall to wall games from week two of the WPIAL season, and hey, even if your game turns out to be not that good, at least you won’t have to watch the Pirates! Some eyebrows were raised last week and there were also a lot of “I told you so”s being thrown around the WPIAL in week one. We continue to discover who is going to rise to the top, and who is going to find themselves in a dog fight for their playoff lives here in 2016. Because for sure, some of these teams are going to show a lot more fight for their playoff lives than the aforementioned Pirates. So forget that dusty old Jolly Roger over there in the corner and let’s go Big Game Hunting!
CTK ’16: 1-A Tri-County South Conference Preview

Frazier gave the much-maligned Tri-County South Conference some respect last season. The Commodores were undefeated until losing in the WPIAL semifinals to Clairton. A new year brings new classifications in the WPIAL and a slightly altered Tri-County South Conference. Frazier is gone. So is Beth-Center. So is Bentworth. All three of them are now in Class 2A under the state’s new six-class sytem. Six members of the Tri-County South last year stayed in the conference. Monessen and Fort Cherry are new this year. There doesn’t seem to be a prohibitive favorite to win the conference. Some expect Monessen to be the frontrunner, but the Greyhounds lost a Week 0 game to Charleroi last Friday. Carmichaels, Jefferson-Morgan and Avella have experienced teams returning.Scholastic Notebook – 10/25/2015

The irony of it. Deer Lakes came into Friday night’s game with the leading rusher in the entire WPIAL this season Hunter Burns. When it ended, Apollo-Ridge had the top rusher ever in a WPIAL game. Duane Brown, a junior at Apollo-Ridge, put himself in the history books when he rushed for a WPIAL record 460 yards in a 56-35 victory over Deer Lakes. Brown was certainly a workhorse in the game, carrying the ball 47 times. Brown broke a 15-year-old WPIAL record. Connellsville’s Marcus Furman ran for 455 yards in a 2000 game. What’s funny is that Apollo-Ridge coach John Skiba and his team had no idea how many yards Brown had or that he had broken the WPIAL record until an announcer from your very own MSA Sports staff came on the field and told him after the game.WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz – Week Four

Saturday was a perfect afternoon/evening for high school football, perfectly timed for two schools in particular as Shady Side Academy and Beaver High School celebrated picture perfect homecoming weekends and the tradition of playing on a Saturday instead of Friday night. here are the Top Four performances from the Fourth Friday of the 2015 season from a pair of AA Allegheny Conference afternoon games and two conference contests played under the lights. CTK 2015 – Class A Black Hills Conference Preview

The Hills have been alive the past two years. In 2014 and 2013, the a team from the current Black Hills Conference has made it at least to the WPIAL championship game. It was Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in 2013 (then in Class A's Eastern Conference) and Avonworth last year. North Catholic won the title in 2013 and also the PIAA title, while Avonworth lost to Clairton in last year’s WPIAL final. Will the championship-caliber play continue this year? Possibly. Clairton is everyone’s team to beat in Class A, but North Catholic and Avonworth are considered two of the best teams again. Brentwood also looks like it has the makings of a team that could challenge for the top of the conference. Here is a look at the Black Hills Conference:

Welcome to Week 5 of the high school football season. Becoming a local celebrity has its perks, and Chick’s Picks was set to enjoy yet another last weekend. The resident WPIAL football prognosticator was asked by the Pittsburgh Pirates to throw out the first pitch Saturday night when they took on the Brewers. Chick’s Picks did not hesitate to accept the offer, especially considering the tremendous success the Pirates have had this season. Game night arrived. Chick’s Picks was escorted onto the field by the Pirates PR staff. As she stepped onto the mound, she took it all in—the bright lights, the sellout crowd of over 37,000 fans, and even the famous Pirates Pierogies. Then, the nerves set in.
