2013 WPIAL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS RESULTS

The top seeds advanced all the way to the finals where two of the three were able to reach the high expectations the district steering committee set for them. The Tigers claimed girls volleyball gold for the fourth time, the Yellowjackets for the third time and the close but no cigar Crusaders captured their school first ever volleyball title. North Allegheny, Freeport & Bishop Canevin Win WPIAL Girls Volleyball Gold

All three top seeds made it to the WPIAL girls volleyball championship finals Saturday at Chartiers Valley High School while a pair of #2-seeds were joined by a #7-seed in the title match thrills. While Bishop Canevin needed five games to knock out the defending champion Greensburg Central Catholic in Class A, Freeport and North Allegheny needed only the minimum three games to add to their golden collection. MSA Sports Hometown Girls Volleyball Salute – FREEPORT YELLOWJACKETS

Last 7 years the Lady Jackets section record has been 90-2. In 2013, Freeport finished 11-1 and as co-champs with Knoch in Class AA Section 4. They are the #2-seed in the Class AA playoffs.This years Lady Jackets are anchored by it's 5 senior players. Returning AA all-state and WPIAL first team outside hitter Alexis Schrecengost (2.6 GPA) along with Section 4-AA All-stars libero Brittany Bianco (3.7 GPA), setter Emily Toy (4.0 GPA)and opposite hitter Megan Sweeny (3.4 GPA).

Hometown Volleyball Match Recap: Knoch Knights 3 – FREEPORT YELLOWJACKETS 2

The Freeport Yellowjackets' Girls' Volleyball team had been running roughshod over all of its competition going into the return match with the Knoch Knights.  The two squads met back on September 10, and the Yellowjackets embarrassed the Knights, 3-0, on Knoch's own home court.  The Knights had quite a bit of time to think about revenge since then, and they jumped on the unbeaten Yellowjackets in Game 1, winning 25-21, on huge kills from Celina Sanks and Mary Zellhart. The Jackets pulled to within one at 22-21, but could get no further than that.

Hometown Volleyball Match Recap: FREEPORT YELLOWJACKETS 3 – Seton-LaSalle Rebels 0

The number one team in the MSA Sports Class AA Volleyball rankings showed up to impress in their first appearance as a hometown volleyball team on the MSA Sports Network. Freeport (7-0) jumped out to an early lead leaning on Senior Alexis Schrecengost for her power at the net and Sophomore Zoe Pawlak at the net and service line. Whether it was Pawlak's jump serve or a combination her and Schrecengost at the net in game one Seton-La Salle (5-1) had no answer. Freeport was able to set up their offense and win game one with a score of 25-19.

CTK 2013 – WPIAL Double-A Allegheny Conference Preview

The Allegheny Conference of Class AA has seen its share of balance recently. Over the past four seasons, four different teams have won at least a share of the conference title.While many are picking Shady Side Academy as the team to beat this year, balance seems to permeate through the section again.A number of teams seem capable of grabbing one of the WPIAL playoff spots. One thing the teams in the conference would like to do is improve their playoff fortunes. Hempfield and South Fayette are the Golden Girls of WPIAL Team Track & Field in 2013

Hempfield won their first WPIAL girls team track championship in 1984 and waited 27 years for their second crown. The wait for a third district title was a bit shorter...12 month to be exact as the Spartans won gold for a second consecutive season Thursday at Baldwin High School. Meanwhile, South Fayette captured the schools first ever girls team track gold by edging Beaver, Southmoreland and two-time defending champion Freeport.
