The Win Streak is No More for New Castle

It was going to happen at some time this season that the New Castle Red Hurricanes boys basketball team would taste defeat. New Castle had an amazing run over the last three years, claiming consecutive WPIAL championships and finishing the run with a 31-0 season and a state title in March. The winning streak of 33 in a row came to an end Tuesday night at the hands of the Hampton Talbots, a 87-67 victory for Hampton at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House in front of a full house. Senior guard Joey Lafko led the way for the Talbots with 37 points as the Talbots led by nine at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. David Huber tossed in 13 as Hampton beat New Castle for the first time in ten tries, including the last three WPIAL championship games.Chicks Picks – Week Eleven – 2014

Welcome to Week 6 of the high school football season. We have reached the mid-way point in the season—a critical point where some teams make it or break it, step on the gas, or are comfortable setting the cruise control for the remainder of the season. Chick’s Picks spent some time reflecting on her own first half performance, along with other recent halves of distinction—most notably the Steelers regular season opener against the Browns. The Steelers built a seemingly solid 27-3 lead over the Browns going into halftime. Battling back, though, the Browns tied the game late in the fourth quarter before the Steelers eventually closed the door with a game-winning field goal.WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Six 2014

The tension is starting to mount here in the 2014 WPIAL football season. On the field, in the standings and, yes sometimes in the plush MSA Sports World Headquarters as some of the MSA gang have occasionally wandered too close to Mike Azadian’s “Friday Night Eats”. Mitch tends to respond to people taking his pizza the way the 2014 Clairton Bears have responded to not picking up their sixth straight WPIAL championship in 2013, angrily and emphatically. Avonworth had no problem at home Monday evening with Class AAA opponent Hampton in this non-section matchup, winning 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-15) over the Talbots. Game 1 proved to be the closest of the night, as Hampton had a 4-2 lead, but that proved to be the Talbots only lead of the evening. Tied at 6, Avonworth ran of three unanswered points to lead 9-6 and the Antelopes never looked back. Avonworth would add two more 3 point rallies and then grabbed the victory by scoring 7 of the games last 8 points.Scholastic Notebook – 09/05/2014

It is a recurring storyline at Indiana High School. The Stapletons are staples of the football team. It has been the story in recent years at Indiana, and it is again this season. Two of the four Stapleton brothers had big impacts on the Little Indians’ opening-night upset victory against Mars last Friday. Riley Stapleton, a 6-5 senior receiver, caught seven passes for 95 yards and scored a touchdown. The teams in the Greater Allegheny Conference will have something new to worry about this season. They hope to avoid the bite of the Gators. One of the major changes in the WPIAL football landscape this year is Gateway dropping down to Class AAA. Since Gateway opened in the mid 1950s, the Gators had always played in the largest classification. But the school’s enrollment allowed the team to drop from Class AAAA to AAA this season.Scholastic Notebook – 04/25/2014

Football is only four months away and basketball ended only last month. But the coaching wheels are turning in both sports. There were a number of coaching moves this week in the WPIAL, some of them noteworthy. Here are some coaching happenings this week. In football: * Deer Lakes turned to a former NFL player as its new coach. Steve Sciullo takes over a team that did not win a game last season. Sciullo graduated from Shaler in 1988 and then played at Marshall before playing offensive line in the NFL for a few seasons. He has been an assistant coach at Hampton. * Norwin hired Dave Brozeski. He has been an assistant at Norwin for the past 17 years.
2014 MSA Sports Boys Basketball All-Netters

Two teams that won WPIAL championships this season each have two players on the MSA Sports All-Netters boys basketball all-star team. New Castle won the WPIAL Class AAAA championship and Lincoln Park the Class A title. They each have a duo on the team, which is picked by the MSA Sports Staff. The All-Netters squad (first- and second-teams) are made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position. The teams also includes three juniors and one sophomore.
