Derry Area wrestler Jimmy Gulibon is in Hershey this weekend, trying to make history. The Derry senior is trying to become only the 10th wrestler in Pennsylvania to win four state titles. If Gulibon wins, this one would probably mean the most, simply because of what he overcame this season. Flash back to late December, when Gulibon was wrestling in the finals of the Powerade Tournament. He won, but sustained a left knee injury. Gulibon, and some others, thought the injury might be serious. They thought it might be an ACL tear. “He was very scared because he never even really had an injury before,” said Derry coach Mike Weinell. “We didn’t know at the time how serious it was. How fitting was it in the four heavyweight championship bouts at Duquesne University between each classifications #1 and #2-seeds that when the dust settled, we would have a split decision. Top-seed Hopewell in Class AAA rode the back of superstar Shatori Walker-Kimbrough to district gold while #1 Seton-LaSalle in Class AA was perfect in winning back-to-back titles. Second-seed Mount Lebanon claimed their third WPIAL AAAA championship in the last four years while #2-seed Vincentian Academy stunned defending champion North Catholic for the second time in three years, giving the golden crown back to the Royals. The Hopewell Vikings got 35 points and 11 rebounds from junior Shatori Walker-Kimbrough as the Vikings notched their third WPIAL Class AAA girls championship, defeating the South Park Eagles 50-34 on Saturday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Hopewell outscored South Park 20-5 in the final quarter to claim the win, the Vikings were 15 of 17 in the period at the free throw line and forced six turnovers in that stanza. Rematch is a popular word for the WPIAL girls basketball championships this weekend. Three of the four title games are between teams that already have played this year – South Park vs. Blackhawk, Seton-LaSalle vs. Bishop Canevin and North Catholic vs. Vincentian. Seton-LaSalle-Bishop Canevin and North Catholic-Vincentian are from the same sections. The only game that is not a rematch is Oakland Catholic vs. Mount Lebanon. 32 WPIAL players put signature to paper and faxed their futures plans to their respective schools on National Letter of Intent Day on Wednesday. Two incredible golden streaks continued Saturday at Chartiers Valley High School as Canon-McMillan and Burrell continued their district mat mastery.
