CTK ’14: WPIAL AA Century Conference Preview

Some things are fresh, while others are the same-old, same-old in the WPIAL Class AA Century Conference on the brink of the start of the 2014 campaign. First, the New Century. Nearly one-third of this ten team conference is new to the section. In fact, two teams are new to the classification as both the Carlynton Cougars and the Sto-Rox Vikings move up from Class A where the Vikings played in the last two WPIAL Single-A championship games. East Allegheny is also new to the conference, moving over from the Westmoreland/Washington County based Interstate Conference to the Allegheny County filled Century Conference, joining the likes of Keystone Oaks, Quaker Valley, Seton-LaSalle, South Allegheny, South Park, South Fayette and Steel Valley.2014 MSA Sports Diamond Studs Baseball All-Star Team

Blackhawk’s Brendan McKay and Norwin’s J.J. Matijevic were history makers. They did things this baseball season that hadn’t ever been done in the WPIAL before. McKay and Matijevic were so dominant and so terrific that the MSA Sports staff had trouble separating the two for Player of the Year honors. So, MSA decided to do a rare thing. They picked McKay and Matijevic as co-Player of the Year. McKay and Matijevic lead MSA’s Diamond Studs team, which is made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL. The team is heavy with pitchers, but some of the pitchers also excelled in the field and as hitters. Here is a look at the MSA Sports Diamond Studs team as well as the co-Player of the Year. On day three of the Draft, former North Allegheny and Kent State pitcher Eric Dorsch was selected in the 15th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dorsch, while at North Allegheny, won the 2009 WPIAL AAAA Baseball Championship and was a runner up finisher in 2010. At Kent State, Dorsch was moved to the role of closer and thrived in his Redshirt Junior Season, posting ten saves with a 3.56 ERA.Scholastic Notebook – 01/05/2014

Ever since George Yokitis became Vincentian’s boys basketball coach in the 2008-09 season, he has tried to have his teams play an up-tempo, full-court style. The Royals press, trap all over the court and try to keep the tempo at a fast pace on offense. But the style has never created scoring like this year. Vincentian Academy is undefeated and scoring at a pace that is rarely seen around the WPIAL. The Royals are averaging 92.1 points a game and have scored 90 points or more seven times. You can say that it’s easier to play this way in Class A. And yes, Vincentian plays on a small court, which makes it easier to score more and trap more defensively. 2012 was another strong year for a pair of Class AA powers and South Fayette and Seton-LaSalle finished one-two in the conference and had some playoff success with the Rebels going to the Quarterfinals and the Lions to the Semifinals. But they were not the story last fall in the Century Conference.In his 4th year at South Allegheny, former Duquesne High School football coach Pat Monroe did what few people thought he could, he turned the Gladiators into a contender.The moribund program turned it around in the fall of 2012 as South Allegheny finished third in the conference and was 7-2 in the regular season before bowing out in Round One of the WPIAL playoffs.

PIAA Baseball Semifinals Recap from Tuesday

Monday saw WPIAL AA champion Beaver clinch a spot in the PIAA state finals. However the news was not as good on Tuesday for District 7 as North Allegheny in Quad-A, Keystone Oaks in Triple-A and California in Single-A all saw their state title dreams and their 2013 season comes to an end with heartbreaking losses. With a PIAA state playoff berth at stake, both the Class AAA and Class AA WPIAL consolation baseball games were thrillers all the way down to the final at bat. A walk-off sacrifice fly and a walk-off triple helped keep the 2013 baseball season alive for both Shady Side Academy in AA and Keystone Oaks in AAA.
