This is the second season that the Big East is a little bigger. This is the second season that Altoona is in the WPIAL and in the Big East Conference. It had been two decades since one of the WPIAL Class AAAA's top football programs had won a district championship. However that drought ended when North Allegheny captured gold by beating the 2009 champion Woodland Hills Wolverines in the WPIAL finals at Heinz Field. Mount Lebanon and Jeannette entered championship weekend searching for more gold. The Blue Devils won WPIAL AAAA crowns in 2009 and 2010 while the Jayhawks captured AA gold last winter. A third seed and a fourth seed bucked the odds and captured Open Class titles. John Marshall won the Nailers Cup while Kiski Area captured a second straight Chiefs Cup in overtime. The WPIAL held its individual wrestling sectionals in Class AAA on Saturday to set the field for the district championships March 3rd through March 5th.
