As we close out 2016 and another great high school sports year, we look back at some of the top stories from around the WPIAL in calendar year 2016. Welcome to week four of the WPIAL football season. Upon the conclusion of this week's games we will have played exactly as many weeks of regular-season football as will remain. Yes, half way already. Football is like a really good chili-cheeseburger, before you realize it, and have time to really savor it, you’re almost done with it. I double checked that information with in-house MSA Sports Network Chili Cheeseburger Expert Robert “Bobby O” Orkwis before I just threw it out there and he did confirm. Week four and we start to see some separation, finding out who are the contenders and who are the pretenders continues as we go Big Game Hunting!
CTK ’16: 4-A Northwest Nine Conference Preview

With the coming of six classifications, some conferences were merged into others. Gone is the Parkway Conference, one of the toughest in the nation. Also gone is the Greater Allegheny, known for some REALLY long bus trips over a 5 county area. Now we have the Northwest Nine, a combination of the two above mentioned with a little Century Conference thrown in. Let’s preview the new conference, which is sure to be exciting for fans over the next 2 years. AMBRIDGE BRIDGERS The Bridgers finished 5-5 last season and made the playoffs for the first time since 2005 out of the Parkway Conference. Ambridge won their last 3 conference games to make the Highway to Heinz. That was the good news.Scholastic Notebook – 05/06/2016

It was against lowly competition, and each game lasted only five innings. But still, the recent pitching performances of Zach Bowen were ones for the national record book. Bowen is a sophomore at Serra Catholic who pitched back-to-back perfect games. Both games were blowouts and lasted only five innings because of the 10-run rule. Bowen’s first perfect game came April 27 against Clairton in a 17-0 win. Then this past Monday, Bowen pitched another perfect game in another 17-0 win, this time against Geibel Catholic. According to the National Federation of High School Associations record book, only two other pitchers are known to have thrown consecutive perfect games. Mike Bradley of Fort Bragg, Cal., did it in 1991 and Anthony Velasquez of Bayside, N.Y., in 2006.MSA Sports Top 25 WPIAL Stories From 2015 Countdown: #25 – #11

BF’s Dom Peretta & QV’s Zach Skoinekovich Repeats as Boys Cross-Country Champs

Two of the three boys’ individual cross country winners were repeat champions, as Beaver Falls’ Domenic Peretta and Quaker Valley’s Zach Skolnekovich defended their championships, while Nick Wolk of Peters Township earned his first title. Meanwhile, all three reigning team champions successfully defended their titles in the event, which was held at Coopers Lake Campground near Slippery Rock. In Class A, Peretta, who is also a standout in track and field for Beaver Falls, notched a winning time of 16:15, 13 seconds better than Sewickley Academy’s Griffin Mackey. A senior, Peretta will be competing for the Penn State track and field team next year.
Marianne Abdalah of Vincentian Wins Third Title in Girls X-Country Finals
At the WPIAL Girls Cross Country Championships at Coopers Lake Campground, there was a brand new champ in AAA. Oakland Catholic's Lauren Finikiotis is a first ever champ for the Eagles. In AA, Knoch's Mandi Moxie won gold Vincentian Academy's Marianne Abdalah won for a third straight year. All of this came on a course that was surprisingly dry after rains from the day before. It was the wind that had more of an effect on the runners all day. In the team portion of the event, Seneca Valley in AAA, Quaker Valley in AA, and Vincentian Academy in A were crowned champions. The top three teams in each classification will move on to the state finals. The Freeport Yellowjackets took a major step in continuing their section supremacy on Tuesday night, as they defeated the Knoch Knights in straight sets. Freeport captured the victory by the score of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-19. In a battle of the top two teams in Class AA Section 4, the Yellowjackets scored a wire-to-wire victory in the opening set, including an eight-point run after the Knights pulled within four at 16-12. The second set opened with a Knoch point, which provided the first lead of the match for the Knights. The lead would be short-lived, though, and with the teams deadlocked at 7-7, the Yellowjackets scored six consecutive points to take command.
CTK 2015 – Class AAA Greater Allegheny Conference Preview

While West Allegheny and Central Valley have battled back and forth atop the Parkway Conference and Thomas Jefferson has reigned supreme in the former Big Nine Conference, the Greater Allegheny Conference has had a number of intriguing teams that have enjoyed success recently. Last year, Hampton captured the top spot, while perennial powerhouse Franklin Regional finished in second. Mars, a team which has been near the top of the standings in recent years, overcame key injuries to still contend and make a playoff run. Conference newcomer Gateway, which was a powerhouse for more than a decade in Quad-A, proved disappointing for most of its debut season.
2015 MSA Sports Diamond Studs

The MSA Sports Diamond Studs all-star team is well-armed. The team is made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position. More than past years, the 2015 team is extremely heavy on pitchers. Some might play other positions also, but eight of the 10 players on this year’s team made big impacts as pitchers. This year’s team has six seniors, three juniors and a sophomore. It also includes six players who have either signed or made verbal commitments to Division I colleges. Two of those six are non-seniors, including a sophomore who has already committed to a national powerhouse college program. Here is a look at the Diamond Studs and the Player of the Year.
