There is undoubtedly more passing in high school football these days. But after two weeks, could this be the year of runners in WPIAL football?While WPIAL football again has some impressive passers, the running statistics have been big through the first two weeks. Take a look:*It’s considered a nice night when a team has two 100-yard rushers in a game. It is extremely unusual when a team has two 200-yard rushers. On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon for high school football, nine district teams took to the field in an effort to keep the high school offense going that began on Thursday and continued big time on Friday. For the most part, those teams did no t disappoint as six of the nine scores 20 points or more. The Foothills Conference is made up of nine schools who played a lot of young players in 2012. While that led to a competitive conference and some exciting football a year ago, it also led to an 1-6 record in the postseason with only conference champion Gateway picking up a postseason victory in the 2012 WPIAL football playoffs.There is an effort up and down the conference to shed that ‘weak link’ reputation the Foothills has when compared to the other Class AAAA conferences. In the 32-year history of WPIAL Quad-A football, Foothills Conference teams have captured gold only four times: Gateway in 1986, Connellsville in 1991, McKeesport in 1994 and only once since the turn of the century, when the Tigers won it again in 2005.National Letter of Intent Day: Division I-A Signings From WPIAL Class of 2013

It was a down year for top talent coming out of District 7. A year ago, 32 WPIAL football players put their John Hancock to paper and faxed their futures plans to their respective Division I-A schools. On National Letter of Intent Day 2013, only 18 players from the WPIAL took part in the annual process Wednesday morning.
