Big Game Hunting for Week Three 2012

Just two games in and we are already beginning to sort the wheat from the chaff here in the 2012 WPIAL football season.  That process will continue as we get into week three.Here’s hoping your favorite high school team is having more success than our local major - college and professional football teams are in Pittsburgh.Heading into the final game of the first third of the football season and Avella has more wins than Woodland Hills and McKeesport combined…that is why you have to pay close attention on a weekly basis in the WPIAL and that close attention starts with Big Game Hunting.

Scholastic Notebook – 09/07/2012

Sophomores had big games. Players who were their team’s No. 1 running back for the first time did some good things. A receiver turned running back also had a big game. The first weekend of the high school football season was a virtual coming-out party for some. Players introduced themselves to WPIAL football – and they were loud introductions. The leading rusher on the first weekend of the season was North Catholic’s P.J. Fulmore, a 10th-grader who had 265 yards. The second-leading rusher was Fort Cherry’s Koltan Kobrys, who played receiver last year. He ran for 250 yards.

CTK 2012 – WPIAL A Eastern Conference Preview

One of the winningest coaches in WPIAL history is out, and a team with the longest losing streak in WPIAL history is in. Such is the saga of the Eastern Conference this year. Gone from the Eastern Conference is Chuck Wagner, the former Springdale coach who retired after last season. Wagner was a head coach in the WPIAL for 47 seasons and his 270 wins is fourth on the all-time WPIAL list. New to the Eastern Conference this year is West Shamokin, which dropped down from Class AA. The Wolves have a 44-game losing streak, longest in WPIAL history. Overall, there are nine teams in the Eastern Conference. Besides West Shamokin, Apollo-Ridge also is new to the conference, dropping down from Class AA.

Friends of Chick’s Picks held the first annual Pumpkin Carve-nival this week to get in the Halloween spirit.  The Pumpkin Carve-nival, as it had been dubbed, was not your average pumpkin-carving party.  Prizes and pride were on the line, and Chick’s Picks was determined to take home gold in every category.
