Local Hockey Players Make Splash in NHL Draft

Three amateur hockey players from the Pittsburgh area were selected among the first 64 players selected in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft on Friday and Saturday at the XCel Energy Center in Minnesota. North Allegheny continued its domination in district girls gymanstics Saturday at Moon High School. The Tigers captured a third consecutive WPIAL gymnastics championship and their sixth crown in the last eight years. In 30 years of team titles in the WPIAL, North Allegheny has now won gold 19 times. It was a rough state postseason for District 7 teams. Only one WPIAL team survived the first three rounds to qualify for a championship match berth. Running for 4,000 career yards isn't as rare as it used to be. Forty-seven players have done it in WPIAL history, and 40 of them have reached the mark since 1990.
