It is most certainly one of the oddest sports combinations you will see in the WPIAL. You’ll be scratching your head trying to figure out how many times you have seen a championships golfer who also is one of the best shot putters and discus throwers in the district. As odd as it sounds, Katerina Luttner is living out the combination at Fox Chapel High School. She won the WPIAL girls golf championship in 2010 and was the runner-up in 2011. She also has been a medalist at the PIAA level and has a golf scholarship to the University of Mississippi. But in the spring, she throws the discus and shot put for Fox Chapel. This spring, Luttner is the No. 1 discus thrower in the entire WPIAL with a mark of 111 feet, 8 inches. She also has the fourth-best shot put at 34-10.MSA Sports Top Ten – WPIAL Softball – 04/03/2012

The 2012 WPIAL Class A girls champs and the lone district team remaining in Class AAA were eliminated on Wednesday, two WPIAL teams got their ticket punched to Happy Valley. Beaver Falls boys and North Catholic girls will join Montour, Lincoln Park, Oakland Catholic and Seton-LaSalle at Penn State University this weekend participating in the state championship games. How fitting was it in the four heavyweight championship bouts at Duquesne University between each classifications #1 and #2-seeds that when the dust settled, we would have a split decision. Top-seed Hopewell in Class AAA rode the back of superstar Shatori Walker-Kimbrough to district gold while #1 Seton-LaSalle in Class AA was perfect in winning back-to-back titles. Second-seed Mount Lebanon claimed their third WPIAL AAAA championship in the last four years while #2-seed Vincentian Academy stunned defending champion North Catholic for the second time in three years, giving the golden crown back to the Royals. The Vincentian Academy Royals saved their best for last, taking their first lead with 55 seconds remaining as the Royals take the rubber game of the series with the North Catholic Trojanettes by a 54-50 score in the Girls Class A championship game at the A.J. Palumbo Center. It’s the fourth title for the Royals, who also defeated North Catholic to win the 2010 title.North Catholic led 44-34 early in the fourth quarter, but Laura Primyon took over the show, hitting a three from the right corner, followed by a three from the left corner and a right wing three with 3:04 remaining, cut the lead to five at 48-43.2012 WPIAL Girls Basketball Championship Previews

Rematch is a popular word for the WPIAL girls basketball championships this weekend. Three of the four title games are between teams that already have played this year – South Park vs. Blackhawk, Seton-LaSalle vs. Bishop Canevin and North Catholic vs. Vincentian. Seton-LaSalle-Bishop Canevin and North Catholic-Vincentian are from the same sections. The only game that is not a rematch is Oakland Catholic vs. Mount Lebanon. All four championship games will be played at Duquesne University’s Palumbo Center. Here is a look at the four championship games:
