WPIAL Week Three Friday Night HighLights

A little rain never hurt anybody, especially teen-age kids wanted to roll around on the natural surface, aka mud, or slide around on the artificial stuff. The storylines are many as the WPIAL football season kicks off tonight. But is there a storyline with more irony than the Springdale at West Shamokin game? There is the new guy taking over for one of the winningest coaches in WPIAL history, and his first game is against a team with a historical losing streak. Dave Leasure will be in his first game as Springdale’s head coach. He takes over for Chuck Wagner, who retired last season after 47 years as a high school head coach in the WPIAL (Oakmont, Riverview, Fox Chapel and Springdale high schools). Wagner retired with a record of 270-202-11, and the 270 wins are fourth on the all-time list.

CTK 2012 – WPIAL A Eastern Conference Preview

One of the winningest coaches in WPIAL history is out, and a team with the longest losing streak in WPIAL history is in. Such is the saga of the Eastern Conference this year. Gone from the Eastern Conference is Chuck Wagner, the former Springdale coach who retired after last season. Wagner was a head coach in the WPIAL for 47 seasons and his 270 wins is fourth on the all-time WPIAL list. New to the Eastern Conference this year is West Shamokin, which dropped down from Class AA. The Wolves have a 44-game losing streak, longest in WPIAL history. Overall, there are nine teams in the Eastern Conference. Besides West Shamokin, Apollo-Ridge also is new to the conference, dropping down from Class AA.

2011 has been a tremendous year in high school sports in the WPIAL. It was a year where some familiar champions wore the golden crown again while some new faces surfaced in the championship picture. It was a year when there was plenty of streaking (not like the 70’s) in both the good direction and the not so good direction.

CTK 2011 – WPIAL AA ALLEGHENY Conference Preview

Either Ford City or Shady Side Academy has won or tied for the conference championship six years in a row. Don’t look for the trend to stop this season.Ford City and Shady Side Academy are pegged by many coaches as the teams to beat in the Allegheny Conference. A year ago, Ford City finished first and Shady Side Academy fourth.

CTK 2011 – 2010 WPIAL Class AA Football Flashback

South Fayette enjoyed a breakout season in 2009. They went undefeated in the regular season and captured the Class AA Century Conference championship. However their season came to a bitter end in a wild shootout loss to Aliquippa in the WPIAL Quarterfinals. That nightmare finish in 2009 though led to a golden dream season in 2010.
