Welcome to another edition of “PIHL Notebook” as we continue our comprehensive preview of the 2014-15 high school hockey season. Today we take a look at the teams vying for the Class A championship. Class A has the most complex breakdown of the new alignment, split into two tiers with two conferences in each. Tier 1 is, fittingly, the more stacked of the two. Three of last year’s final four will compete in the Western Conference, including defending champion Quaker Valley, while McDowell and Montour join from the Open Division and Class AA respectively. The Eastern Conference includes Chiefs Cup finalist Hempfield, the “other” member of last year’s Class A final four in Freeport, and another Open transplant in Gateway.Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Game Recap for 2/6/14

At the Beaver County Ice Arena in Open Class Hockey competition the Wheeling Park Patriots win a wild game over the home standing Blackhawk Cougars by a 6-5 score. In a game with playoff implications for both teams. The game was tied four times, as the Cougars kept coming back. But the Patriots scored last for the win. In the first period Blackhawk scored on a goal by Bobby Piccerilo at 4:28 to open the scoring to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Cameron Houk and Grant Rombold had assists. That lead lasted until :17 seconds left in the period as Wheeling Parks Austin Curnes tied it at 1-1. Two champions have been crowned in the PIHL high school hockey Open Class Playoffs Thursday night. Wheeling Park laid claim to the 2013 Nailer Cup title with a victory over Morgantown while Ford City defeated Indiana to win the Chiefs Cup championship.
