After being stunned by Trinity in Week 6 — losing after holding a 22-7 lead — Thomas Jefferson bounced back in a big way behind running back Tyler Eber’s six-touchdown night to defeat Ringgold, 42-6.
“We needed to have a TJ game,” said Jaguars coach Bill Cherpak. “We needed to establish ourselves. We controlled the line of scrimmage and it makes it easier on everybody else.”
Eber was the main beneficiary of the line of the control in the trenches, ending the night with 267 yards on 37 carries and the six touchdowns.
“He (Eber) just keeps coming,” Cherpak said. “Our hands were tied with some injuries. Our second running back was at receiver, and our fullback was out, so our second tight end was there. But Tyler will carry the ball 40 or 50 times, he doesn’t care.”
The Jaguars wasted no time setting the tone, scoring 21 points in the opening quarter and building a 27-0 halftime lead behind four of Eber’s touchdowns.
Ringgold, on the other hand, was looking to put together a second straight victory, having defeated Laurel Highlands the previous week, but it ended up being a third loss in four weeks for the Rams.
Thomas Jefferson pushed the game into a mercy rule in the third quarter with Eber’s fifth touchdown run, but the Rams lone score would come after, with 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter, when Dennis Hawkins III found Demetri Lowe from 37 yards.
Next week, Thomas Jefferson travels to Chartiers Valley in an important matchup for second place in the Big Six Conference.
“They have great athletes and are similar to Ringgold,” Cherpak said. “They are explosive, make big plays and we need to control the line of scrimmage again. Our guys are back to doing what we do well. We’re healthy on the line, and our kids know how important this game is.”
On the other side, Ringgold continues its three-game road stretch to close the season, heading to Belle Vernon next week.
