Through the years: 40 years ago, Fox Chapel had no answers for Kiski Area

Each week throughout the high school football season, the Valley News Dispatch will take a look at the players, coaches and events that shaped our scholastic legacy.

Kiski Area’s Asayan Jordan scored all four Cavaliers touchdowns Sept. 28, 1985, in a 28-0 victory at Fox Chapel. The Kiski Area defense held the Foxes to just 20 net rushing yards. The hard-hitting contest produced a combined nine fumbles and six interceptions.

100 years ago

• Har-Brack blanked Evans City, 25-0, behind two touchdowns from Cliff Montgomery at Birdville Field.

75 years ago

• Leechburg advanced to 4-0 with a 21-7 victory over Springdale. Vic Kolenik raced 62 yards to the Springdale 19 and lateraled to Teddy Andrews to complete an 81-yard scoring play to give the Blue Devils the lead for good.

• Arnold defeated Allentown St. George, 13-6, on a late 15-yard pass from Lou Abel to Joe Brokaw.

60 years ago

• Apollo stayed in contention for the Class B title with a 20-7 decision against Trafford. Wally Aungst ran for two Striped Tigers touchdowns.

• Springdale’s Bob Hepler scored on three TD passes from Paul Jack, and Jack returned a pickoff 90 yards for another score as the Dynamos pounded Tarentum, 33-0.

50 years ago

• Knoch quarterback Bob Cedzo, playing his first game at the position, fired a 6-yard pass to Bill Tritsch with 8 seconds left, and Mike Kunselman ran in the 2-point conversion as the Knights shocked Kittanning, 8-7.

• Valley went to 3-0 with an 8-0 victory at muddy Derry Area Stadium. Fred Seguiti hauled in a 31-yard pass from Tom Wyant, and Benjy Pryor was credited with a safety when he trapped Trojans running back Lance Matteo in the end zone.

40 years ago

• Kittanning spilled Apollo-Ridge from the unbeaten ranks with a 28-7 victory at Owens Field. Wildcats defensive back Brent Dudek returned an interception 25 yards for a score and set up another with a fumble recovery.

25 years ago

• Burrell’s Peter Kariotis, better known for his prowess on the soccer pitch, tossed a 19-yard pass while in punt formation to Ron Jeffries, and the Bucs were on their way to a 24-0 rain-soaked victory at Summit Academy.

10 years ago

• Two touchdown tosses from sophomore Corey Thomas and four field goals by Jake Chapla propelled undefeated Plum to a 33-0 victory over Norwin.

• Highlands didn’t allow a Carlynton first down in a 42-0 rout. Defensive end Lamaar McKinley throttled the Cougars with six tackles and four sacks.

Five years ago

• Freeport’s Ben Lane, moved to quarterback when Garrett King was diagnosed with cancer, ran for three TDs, returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score and tossed a 48-yard scoring pass to Vincent Clark in a 34-14 Yellowjackets victory over Derry.
