Each week throughout the high school football season, the Valley News Dispatch will take a look at the players, coaches and events that shaped our scholastic legacy.

Plum got by McKeesport, 12-9, in a WPIAL Class 4A opening-round contest Oct. 30, 2020. A 12-yard run by Eryck Moore with 51 seconds gone in the third quarter proved to be the winner.

75 years ago

• Leechburg won its 18th consecutive game with a decisive 62-37 win at Blairsville. Ted Andrews scored on runs of 44 and 5 yards as the Blue Devils set a single-game scoring record that lasted until 2020.

• Tarentum won its 11th consecutive victory in the series with Kittanning in a 20-12 final. Norman Porter ran for two Redcats touchdowns at Dreshar Stadium.

60 years ago

• Springdale’s Bob Hepler set a school record with five touchdowns and two PATs as the Dynamos rolled past Burrell, 34-14.

• Apollo remained in WPIAL Class B title contention with a 27-6 victory over Shannock Valley. The Striped Tigers defense limited the Spartans to 2 net rushing yards.

50 years ago

• Freeport tailback Jack Huth ran for 139 yards and three touchdowns in a 22-7 victory over Apollo-Ridge. Huth died Oct. 7, 2025.

• Kiski Area edged closer to the Foothills Conference crown with a 12-6 win at Norwin. Marcus Woody and Frank Grholski stopped Knights quarterback Jim Cooper at the Cavaliers 5 as time ran out.

40 years ago

• Knoch wrapped up a playoff berth with a 16-8 victory over Churchill. John Ivory tossed a 56-yard scoring pass to Tom Karenbauer and booted a 43-yard field goal for the Knights.

• Riverview won a thriller at Brentwood as Chris Trumble’s fourth-quarter touchdown and a conversion run by John Shoop resulted in a 21-20 victory.

25 years ago

• An 8-yard run by Luis Sanchez and a 30-yard field goal by Beau Elliott was all Highlands needed to sew up a playoff berth with a 10-0 win over Kittanning.

• Plum’s DaRob Wright ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns as the Mustangs secured a playoff berth with a 31-17 victory over Latrobe.

10 years ago

• Deer Lakes clinched the second playoff trip in school history with a 41-20 win over Burrell. Hunter Burns ran for 209 yards and three touchdowns, and Scott Kelly threw for three scores.

• Armstrong’s Zane Dudek eclipsed the 2,000-yard rushing mark on the season with a 254-yard performance against Knoch in a 41-15 River Hawks win.

Five years ago

• Apollo-Ridge went to 5-0 with a 46-14 victory over Steel Valley. Logan Harmon ran for 189 yards and two scores.
