Through the Years: With coach back on sideline, Highlands shut down Valley in ’99

Each week throughout the high school football season, the Valley News Dispatch will take a look at the players, coaches and events that shaped our scholastic legacy.
After missing the first month of the season because of a teachers strike, Highlands coach Tim Karrs returned just in time to guide the Golden Rams to a 24-6 victory over previously undefeated Valley on Oct. 1, 1999. The Highlands defense recorded four interceptions and four quarterback sacks.
75 years ago
• Har-Brack remained undefeated with a 19-7 victory over Butler before a packed house at Pullman Park. Frank Stanowald, Ray Pazczolgowald and Willie Ellard tallied Tigers touchdowns.
• In a special game arranged by Moose clubs from the A-K Valley, Mooseheart of Illinois and Ken High played to a 0-0 stalemate at Memorial Stadium.
60 years ago
• In a battle of unbeatens, Springdale knocked off Leechburg, 6-0, at muddy Veterans Memorial Field. Paul Jack’s quarterback sneak early in the second quarter was the game’s only score.
• John Ciciarelli’s 70-yard punt return and TD runs of 33 and 9 yards led undefeated Arnold to a 20-0 victory over Tarentum at Dreshar Stadium.
50 years ago
• Dan Leri’s 39-yard field goal with 33 seconds left lifted Freeport to a 16-14 victory over Springdale. The Dynamos had taken a 14-13 lead moments earlier on a Dave Timpson touchdown and a Randy Runyan 2-point conversion.
• Plum tied East Allegheny for first place in the Keystone Conference with a 23-13 win over Burrell. Chuck McMillan’s 83-yard touchdown run paced the Mustangs.
40 years ago
• Dennis Shiring’s 70-yard interception return and two rushing TDs propelled Deer Lakes to a 28-6 win at Ford City.
• Chris Thorpe’s 6-yard run with 45 seconds to go gave 5-0 Fox Chapel a 14-6 victory over Franklin Regional.
25 years ago
• Springdale pulled off a 26-7 road shocker against powerful Duquesne. The Dynamos defense posted nine tackles for losses against the Dukes.
10 years ago
• Ray Robair rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns as Riverview blasted Serra Catholic, 41-0, in the annual night game at Riverside Park.
• Kittanning spoiled Burrell’s 500th game and 50th anniversary party by handing the Bucs a 43-7 drubbing. Braydon Toy completed 12 of 20 passes for 316 yards and three TDs for the Wildcats.
Five years ago
• Apollo-Ridge’s Logan Harmon ran for 344 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Vikings to a 35-28 victory over Valley.
