Familiarity won’t be a problem for new Greensburg Central Catholic boys basketball coach Tim O’Rourke.
He’s had maroon in his blood for some time.
A former girls assistant and junior high boys and girls coach at the school, O’Rourke is primed to take over after the summer resignation of Christian Hyland, who guided GCC for six years.
“I’ve been a part of GCC athletics in various capacities for almost 10 years,” said O’Rourke, 45. “I am excited to use the game that I love to help promote the missions and values of GCC.”
When he wasn’t instructing players, he was in the stands watching the Centurions. His son, Brady, who graduated last year and is at Saint Vincent, was one of the top scorers last season for GCC.
His daughter, Quinnlynn, is a sophomore who plays on the two-time defending WPIAL champion girls team.
“I’m looking to build a culture of hard work, teamwork and positivity that will put each student-athlete on a path to reach their full potential as both basketball players and young men,” Tim O’Rourke said. “What attracted me (to the job) was the tradition of excellence both on and off the court.”
O’Rourke, a Ringgold grad who played basketball at Saint Vincent, also served as a girls varsity assistant at Greensburg Salem (2014-17) and was an assistant with the Derry boys (2005-07).
He also has CYO experience with Christ the Divine Teacher School (2011-24) and has run numerous youth clinics.
O’Rourke works in the information technology department at UPMC.
“Tim’s dedication to mentoring student-athletes both on and off the court aligns perfectly with the mission of Greensburg Central Catholic,” GCC athletic director JT Thompson said in an news release. “His extensive experience … makes him the ideal person to lead our program into an exciting new era.”
Hyland will be a tough act to follow, just as Dr. Greg Bisignani was for Hyland.
Bisignani coached for eight years before stepping down in 2017, mentoring Hyland, who was one of his assistants.
Hyland went 119-31, won six section titles and did not miss the playoffs. With him in charge, the Centurions went to the WPIAL Class 2A championship twice and made four PIAA playoff appearances.
O’Rourke will look to carry on a proud tradition, with one of his top goals the same as his predecessors: win the program’s first WPIAL title.
He will take over a team that should look drastically different after significant graduation turnover and the offseason transfers of several players.
GCC went 26-4 after reaching the PIAA semifinals.
“My vision is to create a seamless program, built on discipline, teamwork and hard work, that carries our players from the junior high level through their varsity careers,” O’Rourke said. “We will play an exciting, competitive brand of basketball, focusing on player development and in-game adjustments to ensure we are prepared for the rigors of the WPIAL.
“I look forward to connecting with the players, parents and the entire GCC community.”
