The paint didn’t have to dry perfectly on the easel for Leechburg football coach Randy Walters.

While the brush went sideways plenty of times for the Blue Devils on Friday at Veterans Memorial Field, Leechburg made the plays when it had to in order to beat Brentwood, 48-41, in an Eastern Conference matchup.

The Blue Devils (6-2, 4-1) trailed 20-14 at halftime before rallying behind a barrage of touchdown runs from Timmy Andrasy. The senior running back scored five times and piled up 335 yards on 39 carries.

“It was one of my proudest wins in my six years here,” Walters said. “It was ugly. But it’s one of my proudest wins here in six years. They showed a lot of heart and courage.”

Leechburg’s momentum was slowed down by the excellent playmaking of Spartans quarterback Cedric Davis. He threw four touchdown passes and ran for another.

Altogether, Davis finished with 217 passing yards and 124 on the ground.

“We liked our matchup with our skill guys all week,” Brentwood coach Nick Caponi said. “We knew it would be tough to run inside because they are enormous inside. They did a good job all night of sticking to the game plan.”

The Spartans (3-5, 2-3) took their final lead, 20-14, when Daysaun Spencer scored on a 12-yard run before halftime.

Leechburg senior Tristan Zalenski said Brentwood gave maximum effort. Zalenski caught a 35-yard touchdown pass in the second half and returned a kickoff 80 yards for a score in the first quarter.

“They brought everything,” Zalenski said. “They didn’t stop. They played their hearts out, and I’m happy to come out with a win.”

Leechburg came out in the second half behind the strong running of Andrasy. The Blue Devils took their first lead, 21-20, when Andrasy scored on an 8-yard run.

It was the first of his four touchdown runs in the second half.

“That dude doesn’t quit,” Caponi said. “He has a great line, too. (Andrasy) is a player who keeps driving his feet and doesn’t quit on first contact.”

Brentwood didn’t fade after Leechburg scored 20 unanswered in the third quarter. Parrish Thornhill caught a pair of touchdowns, of 31 and 65 yards, to keep the Spartans in the game.

Leechburg was able to lean on its running game to answer every time.

“Coming out and getting the win is the most important thing,” Andrasy said. “It doesn’t matter if we were down by 15 or 1. Getting the win is all that matters.”
