Trib 10: Power-ranked teams rolling through state playoffs

The WPIAL has enjoyed great success through three rounds of the PIAA postseason and the Trib 10 teams are a big reason why.

In the first four years of the six classification era between 2017-2021, a total of nine WPIAL boys basketball teams reached the state championship game.

Over the last three PIAA postseasons, 13 District 7 boys teams have played for hoops gold in Hershey with four teams each over the last two seasons and five teams playing the in PIAA finals in 2022.

Heading into the state semifinals, the WPIAL has eight teams still alive with two guaranteed teams in Class 3A with South Allegheny and Aliquippa set for a district title rematch and in 2A where Greensburg Central Catholic and Sewickley Academy meet in the semifinals.

If Upper St. Clair in 6A, Chartiers Valley in 5A, North Catholic in 4A and Neighborhood Academy in Class A all win their state semifinals games Friday and Saturday, history will be made with six WPIAL boys teams in the PIAA finals.

On the girls side, six teams remain alive for state gold with two guaranteed spots in 5A with Peters Township facing South Fayette again and in 3A where Shady Side Academy goes up against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

If Upper St. Clair in 6A and North Catholic in 4A win their final four contests, it would give the district four teams in Hershey for championship weekend in the PIAA.

After three rounds on the Road to Hershey, here are the latest Trib 10 basketball power rankings with overall record and last week’s ranking. These rankings have zero classification boundaries.
