Trib HSSN boys basketball player of the week – Calvin Winfrey III

School – Uniontown

Class – Senior

Height – 6-foot-1

Position – Point guard

What coach says – “Calvin had a great week and scored for us when we needed it,” Uniontown coach Rob Kezmarsky said. “Cal does what the team needs to win.

“We lost a lot of good players from last year’s team,” Kezmarsky said of Winfrey’s leadership. “Calvin has been a leader on and off the court. He worked so hard in the offseason, from playing AAU and with all of the Uniontown stuff we did.

“His senior year, he has picked up his scoring for us and does so much. He is a very good defensive player for the team. Calvin is a four-year starter, a 1,000-point scorer and 4.0 student. He gives everything he has to the program, and he is very involved with the youth in the community also.

“He has three section titles and, in 2023, helped us reach the state Final Four. He is excited for the playoffs this year. With all the players we lost from last year, he is a major part of the reason we are 19-3.”

#Earned – During Calvin Winfrey III’s time in a Red Raiders basketball uniform, the team has been a district contender. He helped them accumulate 14 wins as a freshman and 23 victories in each of his sophomore and junior seasons. The problem for Uniontown the last two years is it kept running into the machine known as Lincoln Park. The Leopards beat the Red Raiders in the 2023 state semifinals, the 2024 WPIAL semifinals and the PIAA second round a year ago. Without a worry in the world about Lincoln Park, Winfrey and his team enters the Class 5A postseason as Section 1 champ and the No. 3 seed with a 19-3 record. The final two wins came last week when Winfrey scored 23 points in a road victory over rival Laurel Highlands, 70-63. On Friday in the regular season home finale, the Red Raiders rolled past playoff-bound Franklin Regional, 73-54, thanks to 24 points from Winfrey.

Background – Winfrey plans to play basketball at the next level, but will wait until after the season to make his final college choice. Winfrey played football for independent Uniontown, and he suffered an ankle injury that healed in time for the basketball season. He also plans to run track for the Red Raiders this spring, which he has done throughout his scholastic career. His events have been the 100- and 400-meter dash and the long jump. He enters the postseason averaging 20.7 points per game, joining teammates Notorious Grooms and Isaac Ellsworth as Uniontown starters averaging over 15 points per game this season. He eclipsed the 1,000-career point total earlier this year and is closing in on 500 points this season and 1,400 for his career. Calvin’s dad also played basketball at Uniontown.
